Street Fighter (1994)

Unlike the Mortal Kombat movie that was released around the same time, Street Fighter is a terrible adaptation of a popular fighting video game. There are no memorable fight scenes, there are way too many characters trying to share screen time and a lot of the actors do not do their characters justice.

There are a few actors who look good in their roles, Raul Julia looks the part for M. Bison, Vega looked good and Zangief might have been my favourite in the movie as he at least provided a few giggles but some of the main characters from the video game were just boring, Ken and Ryu? It was only 1-2 weeks since I last watched this movie and I have a lot of trouble remembering anything either of those two did aside from walk around and make a few wise cracks.

Mortal Kombat did much better, they actually put a spotlight on characters fighting which resulted in some cool one-on-one battles. The fights didn't even need to have the most impressive kicks ever, they just had to showcase them and give them flair. Street Fighter goes for the opposite, mixing in way too much gun play on top of its generic, uninteresting plot for a game that revolved around characters kicking and punching each other with the occasional fireball or whatever.

Street Fighter is a boring, convoluted action movie. If you think this is a good movie, you can lick my ass.

Oh boy, Street Fighter, an old childhood favorite of mine.

How do we go about rating this movie? If we look at its objective qualities, it's a big failure and an enormous mess. Due to Capcom's demands, they had to cram way too many characters into a short screen time and give them hurried and unnecessary subplots. Its only real redeeming quality is Raul Julia's deliciously hammy performance as M. Bison. Barely worthy of a below average score.

But for fans of bad movies, there is a lot to enjoy. Jean-Claude Van Damme and his accent as All-American Guile is a riot and the other terrible miscasts and insane events taking place will keep you wondering "what else will they screw up?". It's not for everyone, but those who have a palate for this kind of trash will get a lot of fun out of it.
