Once Upon a Time at Christmas (2017)
Review by Bradley Frohloff

5 / 10
As I prepare myself to watch this, I curiously check the current IMDb rating for the movie which stands at a lowly 3.3/10. Oh damn, should I bother watching? Eh, it's Christmas time... I might as well just suffer my way through it.

I'm not really sure what to make of the characters in this movie. We've got an ex-militant dressed as Santa, but he couldn't be arsed to wear a white beard. He also has a sidekick, who is dressed as Mrs Claus but looks more like a crack-addicted Darryl Hannah auditioning for the next Harley Quinn movie. There's a redhead in the movie that is totally cock crazy, the town mayor is completely ridiculous considering the movie plays out as somewhat serious and then there is the town sheriff who seems to have a fetish for closing the local shopping mall.

There's some interesting plot points throughout, but they all seem half-baked in one way or another. Some of the attacks feature some questionable CGI, and some of the actors have fairly hokey dialogue... In fact, one victim in the movie appeared to be smiling as she gets impaled by an arrow in what should have been a moment of panic and angst. I guess the director was like, "Fuck it, no one will notice". There's some excitement to be had while watching the movie, but it's all marred by its cheap feel. My rating would have been better if the supporting characters weren't so ridiculous and the movie ditched CGI effects for simple things like axe stabbings.

Once Upon a Time at Christmas isn't a complete waste of time but there are certainly much better Christmas-themed slasher movies out there that deserve your attention before you waste any time trying to watch this one.
