The Predator (2018)
Review by Bradley Frohloff

6 / 10
I think I should start off by letting you know that I am unfamiliar with the intricate details of Predator lore outside of the theatrical movies that currently exist. I don't read any comics, books or whatever else out there that expands upon what has been laid out in the movies. And to be completely honest, I probably don't even pay a whole lot of attention to the details that get laid out in the movies either. I purely watch these movies for the entertainment that the characters, creatures and action provides... not so much for the story.

From start to finish, the movie is a wild ride. There's always something going on with action aplenty. People are constantly getting slaughtered and shot up, though I can't recall any moments that had me creaming in my pants with excitement. I like the traditional Predator, y'know, the one from the first couple of movies and while that type of Predator is in the movie, it's not featured anywhere near as much as I would have liked. Instead we see a lot more of this ultimate Predator, which is about twice the size of the normal Predators and is completely CGI.

While I understand that the type of things this movie was trying to do calls for a bunch of artificial assistance, it does seem to have taken too many liberties with it. The first half feels more like a movie and the second half feels like a cartoon at times. There are also these dog-like creatures in the movie, and these things didn't really do anything for me.

There's a couple of decent character interactions in the movie. Boyd Holbrook does an adequate job as the lead hero but the wise-cracks from Keegan-Michael Key and Thomas Jane as a tourette ticking time-bomb provided quite a bit of humour which helped to keep things entertaining when there was no Predator action filling up the screen. While I'm sure there is a backstory worthy of exploring with Jake Busey's character, given that he is the son of a major character from Predator 2, he may as well not have even been in it at all as his character adds nothing.

The Predator is an okay movie but would have been a lot better if it had more of the traditional Predators in it and a lot less CGI.
