Horror Talk / Mikey (1992)
April 29, 2018, 10:30:58 PM
While certainly enjoyable to an extent, Mikey's biggest drawback is that it's moderately unremarkable. Some great actors and actresses, along with some solid deaths, makes it a movie somewhat worth watching, but it probably won't be a movie you happen to remember.

What did you think of this 90's killer kid flick?

Generally speaking, I'm not a big vampire fan myself (aside from Fright Night, which is one of my favorite 80's flicks, there's not a whole lot of vampire films I love), but having read and enjoyed the original novel, I think that helped boost my interest, along with the fact it stars Rob Lowe, who, while not my favorite West Wing actor, is still a fun (and moderately offbeat) choice for the main character.

Like I said, I've not seen the original yet, and given it's three hours and seven minutes, it's certainly a time commitment, but given that it stars David Soul (Starsky and Hutch fame), I think when I do see it, I'll get a kick out of it.

Horror Talk / Salem's Lot (2004)
April 28, 2018, 05:03:15 AM
This television adaptation is a pretty fun time, overall. It's lengthy, but decently worth it. Having not seen the 1977 version, I can't really compare the two, but I can say that I had a good time.

What did you think of this King adaptation?

Horror Talk / The Lesson (2015)
April 28, 2018, 04:57:15 AM
Though the beginning is heavy in drama and may come across as meandering, I think this UK flick really worked out. Humanizing the characters before having them tortured was a nice touch, as was the epilogue. There are a few scenes and subplots that I didn't care for, but overall, The Lesson is worth a view, I feel.

What say you on this British flick?

Horror Talk / Re: Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988)

Just got my review up.

What it boils down to is the fact that this movie occasionally really doesn't make sense, or at least it doesn't go out of the way to fully explain some stuff. Cool ideas (Cenobites originally being human, for instance), but not fleshed out that well.

Still, visuals are amazing, and when all's said and done, it basically reaches the levels of the first (gave the first an 8/10, and this one a 7.5/10).

Boy, that rewatch was a kick in the head.

Used to like this one, but having just finished it, it's easily the worst in the first four flicks. Definitely doesn't even compare to the third in terms of almost anything.

The death scenes were really all that this was worth watching for. Everything else must have been pure nostalgic foolishness on my part. Certainly a disappointing rewatch.

My harsh review is now up.  [*browwink*]

Horror Talk / HauntedWeen (1991)
April 26, 2018, 08:33:05 AM
While possessing some unmemorable characters and a few uninspired kills, this low-budget Kentucky-based slasher has a lot of heart. Toward the end, scenes manage to get more tense, and despite the flaws, HauntedWeen just seems to work out.

What did you think about this early 90's slasher?

Horror Talk / Exeter (2015)
April 26, 2018, 08:28:03 AM
Despite one amusing line, some cool death scenes, and an almost okay idea, Exeter isn't even remotely worth seeking out. Given a surprise ending, multiple scenes throughout the movie don't make sense, the characters are utterly unable to actually think about how to escape the situation they're in, and overall, it's just so damn underwhelming.

Have you chanced upon this flick?

Dissing the French. Way to open this site to a high French audience there, Chuckmeister.  [*laugh*]

I've not seen this one, though. Based on what I know of it, I could see it going either way insofar as enjoying it.

Horror Talk / Cube 2: Hypercube (2002)
April 24, 2018, 06:17:05 AM
Lacking much of the charm and suspense as the original, not to mention any really memorable traps, Cube 2: Hypercube still manages to pull out a just-below average rating due to the likability of a few of the characters and some of the concepts presented in the movie.

What did you feel about this sequel?

Horror Talk / The Blackburn Asylum (2015)
April 24, 2018, 06:13:28 AM
Entirely generic, The Blackburn Asylum has little to offer not already served up better in Wrong Turn (2003) and the 2006 The Hills Have Eyes remake. While there is an okay kill, and the beginning is decently suspenseful, overall, The Blackburn Asylum both fails to make a positive impression and fails to leave much a memorable impression also.

What did you think about this flick?

Horror Talk / Re: The House Of The Devil (2009)

If I recall, the only Ti West movie I've seen was The Roost (2005), which I thought had a really interesting feel to it.

I've heard mixed things about this one, but I get the feeling that I'd like it when I get around to seeing it.

The Negotiator (1998)

An all-around fun movie, with a little more thought behind it than a lot of other action flicks. Nice to see Jackson and Spacey play so well off each other. Story's engaging. David Morse (Green Mile), John Spencer (of The West Wing fame), and a younger Dean Norris (Breaking Bad) are all nice to see also.

Always enjoyed this movie, and probably always will. Solid flick.

Horror Talk / The Haunted Castle (1921)
April 21, 2018, 06:47:22 AM
This German mystery/horror-hybrid runs a bit longer than it really needs to, but at the same time, has a foreboding atmosphere and is an enjoyable watch, even if it feels a bit dated.

Have any thoughts on this early movie?

Horror Talk / Seclusion (2015)
April 21, 2018, 06:38:44 AM
A mixed bag, Seclusion has some solid actors and actresses, and not a bad story, but some sequences needed tightening up and some things just didn't work. Not a bad film, I get the sense that many would find Seclusion more forgettable than most.

What are your thoughts on Seclusion?
