Horror Talk / Ghost Voyage (2008)
January 22, 2019, 09:12:12 AM
This is a pretty uninspired movie, with a plot twist you can see coming from miles away. Most of the characters are virtual non-entities, and really, most of the special effects range from mediocre to bad. There are more than a few decent-to-good Sci-Fi/SyFy movies, but this certainly isn't one of them.

Horror Talk / The Murder Clinic (1966)
January 19, 2019, 10:23:50 AM
While this early giallo lacks the flair of it's contemporaries, it still had a pretty good atmosphere, some decent twists, and a pretty fun setting. Definitely not the best Italian giallo, but for a one-off director, this isn't a bad little picture.

Have you seen this 60's giallo?

Horror Talk / Alien (1979)
January 17, 2019, 10:47:17 AM
A classic of the science-fiction/horror genre, Alien does a great job with pretty much everything, creating an intense, suspenseful film that's certainly worth a viewing.

Horror Talk / Poison for the Fairies (1985)
January 16, 2019, 06:28:21 AM
Very much a slow-burn, this Spanish film has a pretty ominous feeling if you don't object to the singular focus of two young girls as the main characters. It does take some time for us to reach the fun conclusion, but I generally think it's worth it.

Have you any thoughts on this atmospheric Spanish flick?

Horror Talk / The Deadly Camp (1999)
January 15, 2019, 03:29:56 AM
While the kill scenes in this Asian film are decent, there's far too much time spent on the ongoing drama between the characters, which wasn't something I found particularly enthralling. With far more in common with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre than contemporary slashers at time time (Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer), The Deadly Camp had potential, but just didn't go anywhere interesting with it.

What are your thoughts on this Asian slasher?

Horror Talk / A Tale from the East (1990)
January 13, 2019, 02:51:34 AM
This movie can get utterly goofy at times, yet, if you're a fan of 80's/90's Asian fun, I suspect the flick would come across moderately well. When the movie veers toward horror, it hits most of the right spots, but unfortunately there's a stronger current of both fantasy and comedy present.

Horror Talk / Mystics in Bali (1981)
December 28, 2018, 06:57:48 PM
This Indonesian horror film has a few interesting scenes in it, and the folklore behind it's origins are mildly unique, but honestly, this movie didn't do it for me at all. It felt sort of hollow, and the interesting stuff didn't make up for what this movie lacked.

Have you seen this 80's Indonesian film?

Horror Talk / Kung Fu from Beyond the Grave (1982)
December 25, 2018, 11:42:45 AM
Goofy to the extreme, which is usually a turn-off for me, what saves this martial arts/horror hybrid is that it's pure silly fun from beginning to end. A Dracula who knows kung-fu, some hilarious special effects for black magic, and a pretty easy-going story, if you're a fan of Asian horror from this era, Kung Fu from Beyond the Grave may be worth checking out.

Horror Talk / Beauty and the Beast (1962)
December 22, 2018, 10:54:46 AM
There are some spooky sequences here, and moderately decent special effects for the time, but as fun as I found the film, it would definitely disappoint those looking for version of the story dripping in both horror and suspense. A fun little movie, but not horror enough to bring in fans of the genre, and not memorable enough to really stand out that well.

What are your thoughts on this 60's version of the classic story?

Horror Talk / The Monster Walks (1932)
December 20, 2018, 03:07:37 AM
I've seen this hour-long flick multiple times, and it's never ceased to amuse me. A strong atmosphere, good sense of mystery, solid red herrings, and a gorilla, The Monster Walks may be cheaply-made, but still carries with it a strong sense of fun.

Horror Talk / Mute Witness (1995)
December 15, 2018, 07:35:10 AM
Mute Witness starts out rather strong and suspenseful but then turns into more a blackly comedic crime flick, which was a shift I could have done without. If they had stuck with the initial slasher feel, I think I'd have liked this film a lot more. Still an above average film, but only just.

Horror Talk / Halloween (2018)
December 14, 2018, 07:54:19 AM
There's plenty of things to like about this movie, such as the strong and occasionally brutal gore, the suspense, and Jamie Lee Curtis. At the same time, while it's an above-average movie, I don't know how special it ends up being. Still, though it lacks the charm of the first few Halloween movies, it's still probably the best Halloween movie we've gotten since Halloween 4, and thus, this comes recommended.

Horror Talk / Blood Feast (1963)
December 13, 2018, 01:49:51 AM
Though certainly a bad movie in many ways, H.G. Lewis' first splatter flick is important both for the evolution of horror and a good precursor to what slasher movies become in the 1970's. Stilted acting, stagy sets, and a not great story aside, the gore is impressive, and Blood Feast certainly has it's place in the genre.

Horror Talk / Deadfall Trail (2009)
December 11, 2018, 10:56:00 AM
Deadfall Trail has a very minimalistic feel to it, and seems as though it takes itself pretty seriously. Unfortunately, it's not a fun watch, and I got very little enjoyment out of it. It lacks some character explanations, drags on too long, and while the ending scene is decent, doesn't make this a film that's worth watching more than once (which I sadly made the mistake in doing).

Have you an experience with this flick?

Horror Talk / Deep Red (1975)
December 10, 2018, 12:49:08 AM
There's very little about Deep Red that I didn't like. It had a fantastically fun and engaging mystery, solid characters, some pretty brutal deaths, suspenseful sequences, and a great score. This is a great giallo, and a very engaging film (at two hours and seven minutes, I was never once bored). One of Italy's best.

Horror Talk / Delusion (1981)
December 08, 2018, 11:56:07 AM
Though little-known, this early 80's flick has the sensibilities of a 70's movie, from first-person narration to a somewhat dry, rather serious in tone, story. That said, I had a lot of fun with this, though the kills were rather weak. Still, I got a really blast out of the ending, and I'd say this warrants a rewatch sometime down the line.

Horror Talk / Embrace of the Vampire (1995)
December 05, 2018, 10:40:29 AM
While the solid nudity in this film (much of it from actress Alyssa Milano) certainly didn't go amiss, this vampire flick is altogether too sluggish and dull to enjoy. What with it being a softcore erotic flick at times, the horror definitely wasn't the main objective, and if you look at the kills, it shows. Not a terrible film, technically-speaking, but I gleaned little enjoyment from it.

What are your thoughts on this mid-90's flick?

Horror Talk / Split (2016)
November 30, 2018, 08:26:22 AM
Split it a very enjoyable and tense film, even without seeing a previous film of Shyamalan's. The story is well-paced, the performances solid (especially James McAvoy), and overall, a pretty solid watch. I'd definitely recommend it, despite the somewhat iffy conclusion.

Horror Talk / The Facility (2012)
November 28, 2018, 05:41:22 AM
I like quite a few things about this film, including the low-key feel (little music, for instance) and many of the performances. It has a certain feel of realism that many other films lack. That said, there's a plethora of idiotic decisions made by plenty of the characters, and after we get past the halfway point, I start losing a bit of interest. Not a bad movie, by any means, no great - solidly around average.

Horror Talk / Kantemir (2015)
November 24, 2018, 01:58:21 PM
Were it not for Robert Englund, this movie probably wouldn't be worth watching. Even with Englund, I'm not entirely sure it's worth watching, but at least it has a little more to offer. A moderately interesting story here, but not the best execution, Kantemir might be worth a single go, but I wouldn't expect to be blown away.

Any thoughts on this Englund-starring flick?
