Horror Talk / American Horror House (2012)
April 08, 2019, 05:23:15 AM
There's very little to enjoy about this SyFy flick. The story is mediocre, the characters are pretty much universally awful, and there's very little to look forward to insofar as the kills go. Pretty much a waste of time, and I'm rather saddened to say that I've seen this twice. Definitely not worth it.

What do you think about American Horror House?

Horror Talk / Dark Sanity (1982)
April 06, 2019, 07:26:27 AM
For a slasher from the golden age of the sub-genre, Dark Sanity is pretty weak, and overall, rather soft on kills (be them quality or not). There are some interesting aspects to the film, such as the main character's battle with alcoholism, but there's way too much drama here to warrant any interest in seeing this one again.

What are your thoughts on this lower-budget slasher?

Horror Talk / Deadlines (2017)
April 04, 2019, 08:10:52 AM
Deadlines felt quite a bit like a lower-budget Storm of the Century, and while their hearts definitely went into the movie, the tone was a bit more consistently comedic and campy than I was really hoping for (especially when the plot had such potential). It's not a bad little film, especially for being the first full-length movie by Tracy Lee Staton, but I don't think I'd go out of my way to see this one again.

Have you happened upon this lower-budget flick?

*This took so long to post because I saw it quite a bit before it was officially released. Since that seems to be the case now, I feel safe in posting this*

Horror Talk / Mr. Wrong (1984)
April 04, 2019, 07:41:44 AM
This New Zealand flick isn't particularly amazing or all that memorable, but it is a competently-made, occasionally spooky little ghost story with a very traditional feel. The kills are light, and the pace is somewhat sluggish at times, but overall, while you won't be blown away, I do think it's worth checking out.

Have any opinions on Mr. Wrong?

Horror Talk / The Territory (1981)
April 03, 2019, 06:47:23 AM
I cannot accurately describe how much I detested this. Which isn't to say there's nothing of value here, but when it comes to philosophical ideas, I'll be honest, I'm not an intellectual, nor do I feel I need to be. This movie gave me absolutely no joy, and after seeing it, despite the potential of the plot, it ranks with some of the worst horror films I've ever seen (in all fairness, this likely wasn't meant to be aimed at the horror community).

What are your thoughts on this meandering and pointless movie?

Horror Talk / The Dây (2011)
March 29, 2019, 03:24:11 AM
The Day is an overly bleak, gory, action-packed flick that I've rather enjoyed both times I've seen it. The gore is pretty fun, and generally, despite the despair of the characters in the film, I think it's a rather fun romp. The color palette is used to great effect, drenching the film in a faded, washed out look. I think The Day is a far better film than the tepid response I've read about it. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

What are your thoughts on this post-apocalyptic movie?

Horror Talk / The Shuttered Room (1967)
March 23, 2019, 06:30:46 PM
The atmosphere of this British film is rather impeccable, carrying a moody and almost gothic-feel, but there's a far smaller focus on the mystery and horror, instead throwing in multiple scenes of rapey locals sexually harassing a woman. One time was fine, but they sort of overdid it, especially given the potential they hard with the abandoned mill setting. Generally, The Shuttered Room is a solid 60's film, but when has my opinion ever meant anything?  [*laugh*]

What are your thoughts on this flick?

Horror Talk / Murder Obsession (1981)
March 15, 2019, 03:40:15 AM
For a late entry to the giallo sub-genre, Murder Obsession is a pretty generic and unmemorable movie. Sure, there's some good gore, a solid performance or two, and a decent atmosphere, but the story wasn't really up to the standards of a decade earlier. If you're a fan of Italian horror, this might be worth a shot, but honestly, there's so many better options to go with.

What are your thoughts on this flick, yo?

Horror Talk / White Zombie (1932)
March 14, 2019, 08:37:31 AM
While definitely a classic of the genre (and often considered the first ever zombie movie), White Zombie has never been a favorite of mine. I preferred Universal classics such as Dracula and Frankenstein over this, and still do. This last time, I actually found it a bit below average, which may have more to do with the print I viewed (some audio issues) than the movie itself. Still, if you're a fan of classic horror, this has both good performances and a solid story, so it'd be worth a look.

Have any thoughts on this classic horror movie?

Horror Talk / Witchcraft (1964)
March 12, 2019, 09:53:32 AM
Despite Lon Chaney's presence and a moderately spooky setting at times, generally speaking, I was pretty underwhelmed by this. It just didn't have enough content to really add to the story being told, and while there were portions I enjoyed (such as the driving illusions), it fell short of average to me, and for a 60's film, didn't strike me as particularly note-worthy.

Have you any words on this mid-60's Chaney flick?

Horror Talk / Interface (1985)
March 09, 2019, 09:02:56 PM
This is a somewhat obscure and overly bizarre comedy/horror/crime/science fiction mix. Part of the problem was they tried to shove too much in, obscuring the point (whatever that was) of the movie. It also takes a turn about half-way through to a more conspiracy-driven action flick as opposed to horror. That, coupled with some pretty ineffective (yet occasionally amusing) comedy makes this one different than many other films from the same time, but not really all that good.

What are your thoughts on this mid-80's movie?

Horror Talk / Bloodstream (1985)
March 09, 2019, 11:38:39 AM
While this is super, super low-budget, Bloodstream is a British movie with a lot of heart. A simple tale of revenge made unique by the splicing in of whatever random horror clips the protagonist happens to be watching at the time. What makes it better is that the in-universe gore is pretty damn good too, especially for a film shot on Super 8mm. While the quality may scare many away (think British Nathan Schiff), I found this obscurity totally worth it.

Have you happened upon this bloody British slasher?

Horror Talk / Hard Rock Nightmare (1988)
March 06, 2019, 11:02:15 AM
I may be in the minority here, but if I had to describe this film in one word, it'd be 'fun.' Sure, the acting is pretty bad at times, and the generic hard rock can be a bit grating. But I think there's a lot to cherish in this little flick, from some hilarious dream sequences to the best grandfather of all time.  [*laugh*] It may just be me, but I liked what this was going for.

Any opinions on this late 80's horror flick?

Horror Talk / Horror Movie Checklist 2019
March 01, 2019, 06:45:06 AM
This has been an on-and-off Fight Evil thread since at least 2006 (http://www.fight-evil.com/forum/index.php?topic=3186.0), and I always thought it was a cool idea, and a good way to motivate each of us to watch some movies we've wanted to see but just haven't gotten to for one reason or another.

Quoting Dorkus here, "For those who didn't see the old threads, you basically make a checklist of horror movies you have never seen, along with a mini-review and score. I found it a good way to motivate me to rack up more horrors.

You can make the checklist as long as you want it to be, but I'm going with the same 5 movies per checklist rule as last time."

Ideally, if you stick with just five films, you can get this done easily by the end of the year, and I think it's a great idea to try and revive it.

An Eye for an Eye (1973) [Pretty much what I expected. Fully drenched in 70's atmosphere, the kills here are a bit weak, but it's a somber movie which has a decent story to it.] [6/10] [Watched 12/15/19]

The Green Inferno (2013) [Surprised me - decently gory and rather disturbing, Eli Roth did pretty well here, and while certainly not perfect, I don't fully understand the mediocre response to this.] [7.5/10] [Watched 3/10/19]

Lord of Illusions (1995) [This wasn't quite what I was hoping for. I guess I was expecting something more in the vein of The Wizard of Gore, but this is something entirely different. Story's not terrible, but overall, the movie didn't do too much for me.] [6/10] [Watched 3/25/19]

Kristy (2014) [I rather enjoyed the vibe of this one. Great feeling of solitude, solid, satisfactory scenes at the end, and while I didn't love every plot point concerning the antagonists, I generally really liked this film.] [8.5/10] [Watched 4/24/19]

The Brain (1988) [I enjoyed this one more than I expected. It's not an amazing film, but it occasionally has a very welcomed trippy feel to it, and generally, I think it's a decently fun romp. Not overly goofy or silly either, which is a big plus] [7.5/10] [Watched 5/08/19]

Horror Talk / The Nail Gun Massacre (1985)
March 01, 2019, 05:37:06 AM
Unfortunately, this moderately early SOV horror film doesn't have much going for it aside from pretty solid gore and a high body count. Literally everything else about The Nail Gun Massacre, from performances to the approach they took with the killer, was utterly shoddy. Shame, too, as this was a movie I've been wanting to see for years, only to be this disappointed by it.

What are your thoughts on this SOV flick?

Horror Talk / God's Bloody Acre (1975)
February 25, 2019, 12:06:29 AM
I went into this one with expectations that the film didn't come close to meeting. While the film is well-made, especially for a lower-budget 70's flick, it wasn't what I was looking for, what with some heavy drama and characterization over gore. Perhaps this was my fault going into with expectations (I was looking more for an H.G. Lewis type film), but regardless, this one left me rather disappointed.

What are your thoughts on this 70's film?

Horror Talk / Death Ship (1980)
February 21, 2019, 09:11:59 AM
Despite some potential in the creepy setting and solid atmosphere, this movie just drags and drags with inaction and ends up being overly dull and tedious. It's not a complete waste, but honestly, I can think of at least 16 better horror flicks from 1980 alone. Definitely isn't one I'd watch a second time.

Have you any thoughts on this dull affair?

Horror Talk / 2-Headed Shark Attack (2012)
February 18, 2019, 10:53:54 AM
With a story as thin as this one had, along with the lackluster performances and utterly atrocious CGI, it really makes you question the point of 2-Headed Shark Attack. I get that there's mild appeal in strange animals (which is 85% of why Sy-Fy still makes original movies), but this was just horrible. Only a single performance was worth watching for - otherwise, I'd recommend just about any other horror flick.

Any thoughts on this abomination?

Horror Talk / No Escape Room (2018)
February 15, 2019, 06:31:50 PM
There's a few things I really like about this movie (such as the main performances and some of the sequences), but it does boast a pretty god-awful conclusion that pretty much left everything unexplained. It's a big downside, but some of the action and performances beforehand do a bit to try and counter the atrocious ending. Overall, while not a great movie, for a Sy-Fy original, especially a modern-day one, I'd say the movie's around average.

Have any thoughts on this recent television movie?

Horror Talk / Family Reunion (1989)
February 07, 2019, 05:10:59 AM
This is a somewhat obscure, low-budget late 80's horror flick, but it has a sort of charm that I think excuses some of the downsides, such as occasional sluggishness of the plot and portions of the story that don't seem to go anywhere. Family Reunion takes itself pretty seriously, but there's still fun vibe to be found. I can't say anyone would love it, but I do think it's interesting enough to warrant a watch.

Have you seen this obscure 80's flick?
