Website Functionality / Links not displaying properly
February 20, 2013, 05:58:39 AM
If you edit a post that contains a link and place a new link where an old one used to be (as in, the same piece of text changing from a link to one url to another), the end result when you save it is no link.  This is using the button, the BB tags, as the BB tags have their own linking problems.

Readers: If you need to do this, delete the original text completely and re-enter it until Chucky's able to fix the button.

Website Functionality / Spam Block on Links
February 18, 2013, 09:30:04 AM
A maximum of three links can appear in a post before it becomes blocked by the forum.  This is regardless of whether it is the initial post or a reply.

It seems impossible to post the word "Poke r" in any form without R being separate from the "Poke".

Horror Talk / Longest Running Horror Film Series
February 15, 2013, 02:02:11 PM
Hey guys, I thought I'd do a series of these threads over time.  This is always a great resource to have on hand; it also leads to fun and informative discussions and is sometimes a good chance for the quiet guy in the back of the room to be heard.

Let's start by bringing up the longest horror film series we can find.  Let's not count chains like what the old Universal franchises have become- I'm gonna say only count a remake if it's the most recent film in the franchise and another one hasn't been announced yet.  For the sake of this specific discussion, the only one I'm aware would count are Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street.

As for the longest-running film series I can think of, barring remake chains, we have:

  • Godzilla Showa series - 15 films
  • Witchcraft - 13 films
  • Friday the 13th - 12 films**
  • Puppet Master - 11 films*
Runner-ups (franchises with 8 or 9 entries)

  • Hammer Productions Dracula - 9 films
  • Hellraiser - 9 films
  • A Nightmare on Elm Street - 9 films***
  • Halloween - 8 films
  • Children of the Corn - 9 films*
  • The Amityville Horror - 8 films
  • Gamera Showa Series - 8 films
  • The Howling - 8 films
* Count includes singular remake
* Count includes un-numbered "versus" film
* Count includes questionable sequel

Random Bullshit / Fight-Evil FAQ
February 14, 2013, 12:49:16 AM
Hopefully to be updated from time to time. This current applies to new members visiting the site in its transitional period.

Q: Where's the front page?
A: Seeing as FE has gone over a year without having one, this is in progress.  The Staff is focused on making sure that the front page not only exists, but also is functional, interesting, unique, and demonstrative of what this community is about.

Q: I'm new here.  That's not a question, but, uh...
A: Introduce yourself here.  You can also learn a little about other members in that thread.

Q: Something's wrong with _______. Who's gonna fix it?
A: Post your problems here.  Odds are, this is something related to new coding during the transitional period of the site.

Q: Why doesn't FE have _______?
A: Post your suggestions here.  It might be worth taking a look at the thread to see if somebody else has already suggested it first.

Q: I want to talk about my personal life.  Can I do that?
A: While some events might be grounds for a new thread, this is the general thread to discuss such things.  Please remember that anybody at all with an email address can access this thread.

Q: Why aren't I a Mod?
A: If you have to ask, that's probably why.  A thread exists for individuals who were already given this responsibility, but if you're not already posting there, just keep contributing in a responsible manner and Chucky will ask you if and when he feels he needs your help.

Q: I'm really bothered by this post/feel it's in the wrong place.  What can I do about it?
A: While there's nothing wrong with pointing out to someone that they're being unnecessarily rude, you can also click the "Report to moderator" link on the bottom of any post.  This will call the attention of the nearest Moderator to handle the situation.

Horror Talk / Silent Era Films
February 11, 2013, 06:56:24 AM
This is posted in Horror because it's what I'm most concerned with, but please don't feel shy to use examples from outside of the genre.

I've seen to this point two films from the silent era, and both of them are German made.  These would be Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror and Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.  I enjoyed both of these, but I don't quite feel qualified yet to write about films in this era.

So, I'm turning to you guys.  Who knows about silent films?  It would be easy for me to say at this point that the Germans were the true kings of surreal and frightening films- but it wouldn't be honest because I've never watched a silent film that wasn't German.

So, take this opportunity to talk about your favorite silent films, and if you can comment from a wider perspective, that would be great, too.

Horror Talk / Horror Novels
February 09, 2013, 02:07:33 PM
There's not a paper media section yet, so I'm starting this here.

What's your favorite horror novel, and why?  My first is, and will remain, Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris.  This book played a huge role in my developing an interest in psychology, and it's just fascinating getting into the minds of these characters.

My second favorite, and probably more traditional horror, is Stephen King's IT.  Getting under the skin of Derry truly is terrifying, and IT has seeped its way into every aspect of the town's existence.

Speaking of Stephen King, has anybody read any of his newer work?  I honestly haven't read anything of his that came out after Cell.

Television / Last TV Show You Watched
February 08, 2013, 07:02:49 PM
What's the last thing you watched, either on TV, or a TV show that you've watched elsewhere?

I'm currently watching That '70s Show.  I'm on Season 7 right now and have been watching the whole show in order.  It's not my absolute favorite comedy, but one of the few that I can wholeheartedly enjoy.

Please don't confuse this with the guilty pleasure thread- this is more like the thread that seems to have become popular in Video Games.  What movie seems to have a bad rep, but you feel is a pretty good and enjoyable movie?

For me the archetypical example of this is Jason Goes to Hell.  Aside from a few oddities mostly surrounding Creighton Duke, I love the premise of this film.  It pays homage to the series ("Planning to smoke some dope, have premarital sex and get slaughtered?"), gives Jason the opportunity to do things he couldn't normally, and has some good kills as well.

Horror Talk / Your Horror Guilty Pleasures
February 08, 2013, 06:55:39 PM
I meant to make this thread way back- what horror movies do you know in your heart are crap, but you just can't help loving them?

#1 on my list is Rawhead Rex.  It's made some wrong turns so bad that Clive Barker does his best to pretend the film was never made, and yet... I think I'm going to watch this tomorrow.

Horror Talk / Horror Movies You're Looking Forward To
February 07, 2013, 09:08:47 AM
If anything needs a comeback, this does.  What upcoming horror films are you not terrified of?

As for myself-
Godzilla.  I'm a little concerned that it's by the director of Monsters, but that hasn't been enough to overshadow my anticipation of this film.

Maybe it's because I don't watch a lot of trailers, but that's actually all I've got.  But I know some other people here have some.

Video Games / Favorite Video Game of all Time
February 06, 2013, 05:52:12 AM
I'm gonna be mighty pissed if this thread is mostly games from the past 10 years.
Title says it all.

I, of course, am going to have to go with Final Fantasy VII.  Alongside Pokemon Blue, this is the game that got me started with RPGs in general and JRPGs in specific.  You can't beat this game's aesthetic, sheer number of unique characters, villains, and while you can probably beat the story, most writers can't or won't.  The graphics have it where it counts, especially for such an early 3D game.  This is the game that I spent months in high school scripting a sequel to, finishing up just as a sequel in movie form was announced.

Television / Saturday Morning Cartoons
February 05, 2013, 03:40:41 PM
I'm sure here people here have something they watch and/or keep up on.  My own Saturday evening checklist:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - while technically this is a Friday show, I'm going to count it here.  Despite initially being wary of the art and tone, this is actually a pretty good adaptation, and taking darker turns as it goes on.  I'm curious to see how it goes.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - I think everything there is to say about this has been said on the internet.  So, I won't bother.

Green Lantern: The Animated Series - It took me a little bit to get used to the loose hand this show has with continuity.  Noting that, the only gripe I can legitimately have is taking a position from a female who really deserved it and giving it to an annoying male character for absolutely no reason.

Doctor Who - While technically not a cartoon, and it probably doesn't air in the Morning, this does air on Saturdays.  Not much to say about something that's off the air for another two months, though.

Other Movies / Upcoming JJ Abrams Films
February 05, 2013, 03:31:37 PM
Seeing as how JJ Abrams is helming both the new Star Wars and the new Star Trek films, I thought they might as well get one shared thread to see what people have to say about them.

I have one opinion on both: Meh, but I'll probably watch them.  The only Abrams project I've experienced so far was a mediocre Star Trek film, and I have a feeling he's going to push the same soul-less generic Sci-Fi on us two more times with these films.

Other Movies / Favorite Non-Horror Film of all Time
February 05, 2013, 06:57:13 AM
We have a favorite horror film thread, so I thought I'd put in a non-horror film thread.

Let's kick it off with Empire Strikes Back- good humor, good action, good drama, and maybe more important for me in a film, great tone and aesthetic.  This was the most collaborative effort of all the Star Wars films, and it shows.

Random Bullshit / The Neverending Story Thread
February 05, 2013, 04:57:35 AM
Let's revive this bitch, shall we?

Post a sentence to continue the story along.  Goal is to be funny, though a cohesive story would be nice.  No flaming, troll-baiting, etc., please.

Shadow, Crash, and L-Face walked into a bar.

Random Bullshit / Welcome Back AKA Introductions
February 05, 2013, 03:31:46 AM
This thread was created for the re-introductions of members who haven't been here for a while, whether you were active when the last forum was closed or not.  If you're new, you could probably post here for now, but I imagine expanding and creating a new thread will eventually be your best bet.  Kind of up to Chuck at this point, at least in the short term.

Anyway, to kick this shit off, I'm Bill, better known here as JasonzSon, possibly recognized from around the web as Man in Black.  I've been active here pretty much steadily since 2005.

Horror Talk / Worst Horror Films of the Last Three Years
February 04, 2013, 08:48:59 AM
Consider this a counterpart to Jiggy's thread.

Hellraiser: Revelations was one of the most bullshit pieces of film I've ever seen and it literally hurts me to think about it.

Apollo 18 was also a 1/1, but mainly because it was the most boring, uninteresting waste of times I've ever experienced.  I had more fun having my wisdom teeth out than I did watching that movie.
