Title: Horror Movies You Hate That Other People Like
Post by: Pastor on February 13, 2013, 03:21:43 AM
Aside from the makeup effects, I think Hellraiser is kind of shit.

I also don't really care for the original Evil Dead, but I do respect it for inspiring Peter Jackson to make Braindead/Dead Alive.

As for more recent films, it boggles my mind that a lot of people liked The Loved Ones.

The Blair Witch Project and The Ring. Fuck these boring pieces of shit. Interesting concepts that didn't do anything for me.

I've seen movies that I thought were just "ok" that other people loved, but that's about it that I can think of.  Unless you're counting things like "a large group like it and a large group hate it" things like Twilight.

I don't think I can use the word "hate" but I thought Attack The Block was extremely disappointing based on how much it was praised throughout its release. A lot of people giving it 9 and 10 out of 10... I struggle to give it a 6.

I loved the film, but it was certainly no 9 or 10...

And maybe that's why I'm compelled to give it a 6, perhaps to somewhat even out the score...

Attack the Block was my second-favorite movie from 2011, so maybe I should just shove myself up my own ass.

The Exorcist. Ok, hate is a strong word for this one. Let's just say, I was underwhelmed by this movie. With 27 years of hype (I saw it in 2000) and statements like, "It's the scariest movie of all time." it ultimately failed to reach that level for me. I actually found myself getting annoyed for not being scared. There was one moment, a moment that was cut from the original film, that came close to scaring me. The spider walk scene. That was it.

Nothing from the head-turning scene, then?  I imagine that parodies have ruined a lot of classic films for newcomers.

The spiderwalk scene is badass, shame they couldn't have it in the original cut (due to limitation with effects at the time, couldn't remove the wires used to do the scene) because it would have added to all the stories from some of my friends parents who said when they saw it people were literally running out of the theatre screaming, throwing up etc. In fact, seeing the spiderwalk scene during the movie, when you're not expecting it, is not only a bit of a jump scare but for me, personally, it also put this major depression on me because it seemed there was no hope saving this girl at that point in the movie.

While it has aged a little, and the 'scariest movie of all-time' moniker (which does hold truth to many people out there) is more or less a marketing strategy to sell movies, it is definitely a great horror movie which I tend to appreciate the more and more I watch it.

The only parody I'd seen prior to watching the Exorcist (at least, that I can remember right now) was Repossessed with Leslie Nielsen. Even then, I was too young to remember it vividly. But no, nothing in that film really did anything for me. It simply had no lasting impact for me and was a "one and done" movie.

I guess it differs from person to person, really. I can understand the impact it had on others, especially when it was initially released. The 70s were a different time. But for me personally, it left me indifferent. No real feelings towards it other than disappointment.

I feel the same way a bout these two.

Same with American Werewolf in London. Aside from the transformation sequence which everyone jizzes over (understandably so)... I don't care for it in the slightest.

Also, just about every J-horror/Asian horror movie ever made.

The Ring. What a watered down load. I remember guys my age going "Ohh I couldn't sleep all night after seeing it." While I"m sitting there going "really? Night of the Living Dead was a far more frightning movie."

The Ring was pretty effective on me when it first came out on VHS.  I'm curious what my opinion would be if I were to rewatch it now.

sounds like you had your hopes up way to high. its hard to scare someone who has watched a lot of horror films over a long period. you just sort of become immune to it.

As for movies i hate that others seem to like i think wolf creek would fall into that category. To be fair though sort of had my hopes up a little to high for it when i first saw it, from the chatter on the boards and some reviews about how good it was. Just find it to be mediocre at best.

Not at all. I didn't really have any expectations going into it. At that point, I hadn't seen very many horror films so it wasn't a matter of being desensitized. As I said, the movie just did nothing for me.

Halloween Resurrection. I gotta say I aint too crazy about this one which is overwhelmingly loved by all on this board. Why I recall these people praising it here:

Chucky: Best fucking movie ever! Without a doubt twice as good as Childs play!
Lface: Loved it so much it brought out the woman in me.
Crash: Busta should win the oscar!
Gorefan: Touching. I cried 3 times and that was just during opening credits!
Shadow: I love cock.

Rosemary's Baby. Completely coma-inducing, but it dupes you into fighting it because of it's classic status, and the demon rape midway was a nice way to give you a shot of hope. So I'm at the end, and finally think I'm going to be rewarded for making it through this giant, long ass Planet Parenthood commercial of a movie. Only to be kicked right in the balls for the true knock-out count once again. No one gives a flying fuck hearing you cry about his eyes you stupid broad, all we've heard you do is whine the whole movie, show us something, anything cool! Bah. I hope someone shoves a copy of this up Polanski's ass while he is in prison.

Pretty much every Saw movie, that includes the first one. It's hard to take a movie seriously when you figure out the twist and it becomes a movie about a guy laying face down on the floor for hours.

How was he able to lie there so peacefully? The guy was in massive pain, his body ached, surely lying still would be an impossible task for someone in his condition. In part 2 he needed oxygen. So how did he manage lying on his lungs for hours in part 1?

Not that it's any smarter, but didn't the chick inject him with a sedative so he would wake up when the timer buzzed?

Or something. I think it was shown in one of the billions flashbacks from the sequels.

Which begs the question why was he needed there in the first place? At least faking being asleep, he could listen in on his plan unfolding but he was knocked out? So why not just toss a real dead body in there and monitor from the cameras?

I love hellraiser 1 and 2 and the exorcist, scariest movies ever. If you believe in demons they are horrifying.

Movies I think are crap...the loved ones, wolf creek, saw series, hostel 1&2, cabin in the woods, attack the block, scream 2,3,4, inside...more to come when I remember them....

I wouldn't say people gush over it. It's cheesy and stupid, but highly entertaining. With Bruce Campbell spouting one liners left and right, kinda hard not to chuckle. He's a very charismatic dude and is fun to watch. Even if the movie he's in sucks.

Nah. Think most people with a brain pan that movie. When I first saw it, I was with some friends and I was like, "It might be alright......" but it wasn't. The amount of confidence I showed was comparable to the quality of the movie. Which was very little.

In my opinion Evil Dead is a lame movie with a few very cool moments (the tree rape, the pencil to the ankle, "we're gonna get you" etc). I pretty much just watch those parts and the gorefest at the end.

Another older thread I missed.

I have two movies to bring up that are pretty widely loved by the horror community that I don't care for at all.

1) The Shining (1980)

I get it, I'm not alone in my moderate dislike of this movie. But I also feel the 1997 mini-series far surpasses this version in about every way, and I've about never seen another say that. The 1997 version, despite it's much lower-quality, is fantastic, whereas this version, while not god-awful, is nothing particularly great.

2) Drag Me to Hell (2009)

When this came out, I saw it in theaters. Rated it a 2/10, or something like that. Thought it was generic, uninspired, and pretty damn shitty. Next thing I know, every horror fan is praising the movie, which just blew me away. Now, to be fair, I've seen this movie only once, and haven't gotten around to rewatching it yet, but though I might give the movie a more fair rating when I see it again (5/10, maybe), based on all I remember, there's about nothing worth watching this movie for, besides maybe Justin Long.

I think Drag Me to Hell earns points because of its ending. It was kind of unexpected to have that type of ending, there are a few other creepy scenes but mostly thanks to the old hag, other than that it's quite generic.
