Title: Pope Benedict resigning
Post by: Shadow on February 12, 2013, 06:47:00 AM
Apparently there is news that the pope is going to be resigning this month on the 28th. The first one to do that in six centuries, apparently. Not sure if anyone actually cares, I know I don't... but it is still some pretty interesting news. Why do you all think that is? Just because of age like everyone is mentioning, or maybe because of all the drama that has been going on the past few years with priests and their followers?

My guess is probably some sort of acombination of the two... with the way that he handled all those crimes, along with his age, he's probably just too tired to deal with other peoples' crap anymore.

Good. I'm not religious, and as far as I'm concerned, I'd be happy if there were no more religions at all, but that's not the way the world works.

It's good, because the guy's legacy is tied to forgiving and/or taking no action against the priests who commited sexual crimes against children, and giving his benediction to a few homicidal homophobes.

If there's gonna be another pope, let's hope it's a younger, smarter, more charismatic and less conservative one.

Does the pope get paid for being the pope? I've been looking for a job.

Couldn't care less actually. I just wish him well, as a buddhist does. [*happy*]
Crap, that was praising oneself... Quick, someone spank me!

I don't think he gets straight up cash, but having a toilet lined with gold and more wealth at your disposal than any king, President or Prime Minister in the world must have some practical advantages.  Minus the toilet lined with gold- that's just show-offy.

Only cardinals can become pope... and the youngest ones are all in their 50s. Keep in mind, most of those cardinals were likely only upgraded to their current status not too long ago, so they wouldn't even be considered.

Point being- I doubt that anything is going to change too much.

Yes, a liberal, abortion approving one is just what they are looking for.

They need to pick an American one for a change! Young, knows how the world works nowadays. Enough with the old, near death ones.

I'm asking for John Paul 2. Bring him back from the dead, I heard Jesus did that once.

More I realized how it sounded which was not my intention at all.

I mean Ireland has its crazies as well, I just find the American ones to be more hilarious then the Irish ones who just seem to be assholes who want to suppress people.

Point is, the jabs aren't necessary.

Back on topic: I really don't have an opinion on this. Not really a religious person and haven't been for quite some time. So I'm not sure why the Pope stepping down is a big deal. Considering he's replaceable, I was under the impression he was just a figure head. :/

I don't see how it's particularly important. It's not really like the pope has any weight on the lives/opinions of secular people (nor most casual Catholic people, to be honest). He's just kind of there, like a novelty lamp that sits on a throne and hates gay people.

Batman doesn't have super powers. The Pope supposedly does.

L, I think the reason it's such a big deal is that it's not supposed to be a job you can retire from.  The past 600 years of Pope have all died in office.  Other than that, they still make it a big deal when a Pope dies, so I guess the point is, anything the Pope does is going to be a big deal in the public eye.

Pretty much the main reason why I posted this... didn't have any clue about that little fact and thought it was pretty interesting. I doubt anyone actually cares what he does, but it's pretty big news nonetheless.

We actually have an expression in Québec which is "Rare comme de la marde de pape". It translate to "Rare as pope shit".

Australian news reports on it, following it immediately with "We may have an Australian pope on the cards".
Seriously? I mean, really? Does anyone want that? I sure as fuck don't, and I'm Australian.

Why don't these guys retire more? I mean dying while serving as pope may seem honorable, but those last few years they spend unable to function, lying in bed are a lot of wasted years where an able bodied guy could be serving in their place. Hell, after a while, we take the keys away from grandpa, why do these guys get to keep on going when they are already unable to?

Curious that you mention this now. I'm wondering maybe it has to do with no one wanting to be the first to retire in centuries?

Maybe we'll see more retiring now that someone's finally breaking the ice. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out over the next few years/decades... depending on the age of the next pope.

Can you imagine if Grandpa got to keep the keys to an entire religion? Jesus fuck.
