Title: Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II (1987)
Post by: Jigsaw on September 05, 2018, 09:47:13 AM
Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II is a fun 80's flick, and despite changing from a slasher to a possession movie, it turned out rather well. While the first one was generally sluggish, this flick moves at a good pace with a somewhat interesting story and some damn good special effects.

What are your thoughts on this superior sequel?

I only saw it once but I like the original, so I'm not on the same "superior sequel" train that you're on.  [*tsktsk*]

By the way, I noticed the review hasn't been added.... which I thought was strange. I can see a page has been created but review not yet added.

Common consensus (or, IMDb votes) are on my side. Original has a 5.4/10 average, this one has a 5.6/10 average.

In yo face.  [*finger*] [*hehehmm*]

Misread the message you wrote, and though I'd post the thread before my review. For some reason. To be fair, I was high at the time, so take that as you may.  [*laugh*]

Seriously, though, this was a pretty decent film - not sure when you last saw it, but you might end up liking it if you give it another go.

I know you're kind of saying this in a light-hearted way, but I don't think the 0.2 is a stellar difference, that tells me they're about equal. I guess it all depends on where you look. I'm sure I could go to other sites that also favour the original. Rotten Tomatoes has the original at 42% and the sequel at 30%.

Not completely related, but I've noticed with IMDb that older movies that were originally favoured as being mediocre/bad movies have had a steady increase over time in their average ratings. Believe it or not, when I first looked at IMDb back in the early 2000's, Child's Play (1988) was at 5.4 and now it is at 6.6 (1.1+), same with one of my other favourite movies like Kickboxer 2 (1991), which used to be 3.9 and is now 4.6 (0.7+).

I've been following some ratings myself for the last few years.  The Driller Killer (1979) used to be around, if I recall, a 4.3, 4.4/10, and recently, it's been around 5.0 or 5.1/10. Not a significant increase, but still, progress.

As it so happens, on a side-note, I don't like the Driller Killer, but it does show a slight growing fondness within the last five years.

It does blow my mind that Child's Platy used to be as low as a 5.4, though - I would think since the late 1990's, if not mid, it would have been seen as something like a new-age horror classic.
