Title: Horror Movies You Like That Other People Hate
Post by: JasonzSon on February 08, 2013, 07:00:04 PM
Please don't confuse this with the guilty pleasure thread- this is more like the thread that seems to have become popular in Video Games.  What movie seems to have a bad rep, but you feel is a pretty good and enjoyable movie?

For me the archetypical example of this is Jason Goes to Hell.  Aside from a few oddities mostly surrounding Creighton Duke, I love the premise of this film.  It pays homage to the series ("Planning to smoke some dope, have premarital sex and get slaughtered?"), gives Jason the opportunity to do things he couldn't normally, and has some good kills as well.

Wolf Creek... a movie many others think of as 'meh' or 'sucks'. I don't think it's unanimously hated, per se, but then again I don't think Jason Goes To Hell is either.

Jason goes to Hell is surprisingly decent, but it feels completely out of place in the series.

I also thought Land of the Dead was pretty good.

Screw Jason goes to hell. Jason X was bloody fun. Kills. Action. cyborgs. takes place in Space! The series had never been accused of being serious horror since after the first 2 films so why this one gets more flack than the others is beyond me. Just do what it is supposed to do. Give us kills and slam bitches in bags into trees.

I didn't think people hated Jason X. It was really fun for what it was, and anyone taking it seriously should reconsider their outlook on the series. It hasn't been serious since Jason Lives.

Is it reviled, or did everyone think it was just ok?

Jason X is awesome, in my opinion. I think there is a strong hate for it from one spectrum of fans (both Jason and general horror fans) but then there is also a group that does find it entertaining. As De eluded to, the body count in that movie is huge. The opening scene has like 8-10 guys getting killed in the span of like 20 seconds if I remember correctly, lol.

I only wish it would have been a little more gory, but it still was great fun.

And as much as I like it, the best part was probably that opening scene. Jason being lose in a governement bunker, killing left and right... they could have made the whole movie out of it!

EDIT: It's still gorier than part 7, which was RAPED by the censors.

You know, I recently re-watched Jason X a little while back, and I had fun with it. There were plenty of moments where you could get a laugh, and the action scenes/kills were all pretty good. I got a kick towards the end where they upgrade the lady bot into a terminatrix. [*laugh*]

My answer to people who dislike Jason X is that they either just don't get it, or they're clearly not fans.  Oftentimes they'll be the ones who say watch maybe the first 3 or 4, Part 6, and Freddy vs Jason, which is still cutting out a huge chunk of what made Jason what he is today.  If not for films similar to Jason X, Freddy vs Jason wouldn't have happened.

Freddy vs Jason is another one tha gets no respect from critics, yet I find it to be an awesome Monster Mash. It's funny, has nods to fans of both series, tons of gore and blood Tarantino-Style and the last fight is a sight to behold.

Movies like this were made by the ton in the 50s, and it was great to see a throwback to that era, with more modern monsters.

It's not critically beloved, but when I see people our age recommending films, it's usually one of the first slashers I see mentioned.

I've found that most the people that like Jason X also like TCM: The Next Generation.

Has there been a TCM movie that even approached the tone and quality of the original?

No, but TCM 2 is still awesome.

It is if you like that sort of thing.  I could take it or leave it, and I'd take a half-assed imitation of the original any day over it any day.

MEH

Subspecies series. Lot of people think it's crap due to low budget and horrible acting but I thought it was great.

2 seems to get a lot of love in the horror circuit.  It mostly seems to be laymen and people insecure in their sexuality that can't take it.

Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers... love it, especially the asylum at the end.

The theatrical version. I have seen the scenes from the producers cut but have not watched it all pieced together and refuse to in such shite quality. There's supposed to be a bluray of the producers cut in the works, no release date for it yet but blu-ray.com has a page for it now: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Halloween-666-The-Curse-of-Michael-Myers-Blu-ray/32768/

How do we feel about the third Halloween?

I think Halloween 3 is decent. I don't get all caught up in the fact that there's no Michael Myers... I just dismiss it from the series and treat it as its own little movie, as it should be.

Would The House of the Devil count? I loved it. Critics liked it too, but anytime I mention it on a forum, everyone says how boring they thought it was and that I should kill myself.

I enjoy it. I have it on bluray. Tom Noonan is a favourite of mine.

I agree with chuck on this one.

Always thought it was a decent film and one that should be judged in and of it's self apart from the halloween series.

Damit now i have the silver shamrock jingle stuck in my head

Very cool, I can also make those three statements.

And I still haven't seen Halloween 3, but I love Tom Atkins.

Yeah, I own quite a lot of Tom Atkins movies as well, my favourite being Maniac Cop.

You know what I really liked, but I've never seen any love for? Halloween 4-5. It was Mike's great return to the series and actually had a good 2 part plot that left things open for the next people (who sadly botched it with 6 then tried to recover with H20). But there was just so much opened up in these films, even getting to see Michael use something other then one handed weapons for once. Oh and the girl nailed to the wall with a shot gun. Fantastic!

I love Halloween 4 and 5, but then a slasher has to be pretty crappy for me to really not like it.  I don't even think I had any complains about H2O the one time I watched it.

I thought house of the devil was good as well but did feel it finished at the climax of the movie. I prefer in some movies that they leave some questions unanswered - makes it more fun. Tom Noonan is cool.

Found House of the Devil to be a boring piece of tripe where nothing happens at all until the crappy end. Like how it looked like it fit the era but otherwise, dull.

Back when we had the podcast for this site, a couple of us actually gave the Halloween series as a whole (aside from the remakes, which we didn't really discuss) a pretty fair shake.

I've been racking my brain, trying to come up with a horror movie I liked that the masses seem to pan, but honestly can't think of one.

OH! And another one that pisses me off to no end. People who diss Feeding Frenzy when they have obviously never seen it. It's a parody of the small monster movies of the 80's made by some guys who normally do web shows, but put the cash together every couple of years to make another movie. I laughed my way through a good portion of the film for all the right reasons. And when we showed it at a convention the people who actually watched it also seemed to enjoy themselves.
