Title: The Gentlemen's Shaving Club
Post by: Crash Dummie on February 08, 2013, 05:38:51 AM
Why do I care about this? First, I'm bored. Two, for me, shaving went from being a necessary boring and painful chore to a fun and manly hobby.

I used to shave with a Mach 3 and canned goop. The blades often tugged and irritated my skin, leaving me with bad razor burn. Then reddit taught me about traditional wet shaving.

That's the kind of shaving where you need:

A brush,
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41k0N9CytML._SL500_AA300_.jpg)

a soap,
(http://i.ebayimg.com/t/3-Pack-of-Colonel-Conk-Bay-Rum-Shaving-Soap-2-25oz-/00/$%28KGrHqQOKpkE1r!eJ99IBN,986gkFg~~_35.JPG)

and (in my case) a DE razor.

With blades like this:

There was a definite leaving curve, but after I figured out how to do it properly, I was left with smoother skin, no more razor burn, and more money in my pockets due to the blades costing next to nothing. The initial start up price is higher, but you end up saving a lot.

My electric razor works to give me stubble that I like, when I actually shave. And I don't mean a traditional electric razor. I mean the clippers you use for your head.

Well, I use that too to trim my beard at a nice "William Riker" length, but I shave with upper cheeks and neck with the DE.

Electric and whatever else I can find. Right now I apparently have 5 blades.

Gah, Reddit! [*angry*]
Title: Re: The Gentlemen's Shaving Club

5 blades doesn't do it for me. 3 blades don't. Hell, even 2 might be too much.

A good shave usually take 2 or 3 passes. One with the grain, one across, and maybe one against. The multi blades cartridges work for many people, but in my case, the skin of my neck is very sensitive.

5 blades going all the same direction won't cut any more than 1 well angled blade, with they drag and irritate 5 times as much.

P.S.: I have a love/hate relationship with Reddit. It's an amazing place to discover a lot of things, but it's also full of teenagers who think they're smarter than they really are, and they post clichéd bullshit, bad rage comics, wretched memes and cats pictures.

P.P.S.: I don't mind the cats pictures too much however.

BTW, shave with hot water. Better for your pores.

I use either 3 or 5 blades. Usually 3, most of the time. Tried two different electric shavers, I get piss-poor cutting quality (compared to razors) and rashes galore when I use them... and that was even when I used one that cost over $500.

I have coarse hair with my pussy neck skin, so electrics just don't shave close at all.

Whenever I shave, I have to use hair clippers. If I use razors, I get razor burn/bumps like a motherfucker and my skin gets all irritated.

I think the traditional way is best the way as Crash Dummie mentioned. FYI if you shave that way you're manly as fuck. I have to shave guys at work and usually use good disposable razors since they give a closer shave. Don't really like electric since they leave patches and don't cut close enough. Shaving hair from wrinkly areas is hard!

I've heard of that, but I can't get a clean cut with any sort of electric trimmer.  Unless I'm just terrible at it.

Here's an actual picture of my sink with shaving apparel.

And of one of my cats. That thing between the razor and the brush is an alum block. It closes little nicks and cuts if I get them, and disinfects the face. It also burns like a mother fucker.

Digging this back up. I'm saying goodbye to the synthetic brush and hello to Silvertip Badger.

This thing is REALLY soft, and it holds lather well. You just have to shampoo it a few times before usage, as it also smells like badger at first.

I used to get bad razor burn. This fixed it, and I don't mind the extra 2 or 3 minutes it takes. It turned a chore I hated into a fun hobby.

Same here, but I usually skip a day or two anyways. The skin of my neck is very sensitive, so even after a good shave, I gotta give it a break. The cheeks and head (I like the bald look once in a while) are fine, but the neck work on its own terms.

I assume most use the razor that looks like a vagina. It's appropriate I guess.

I converted my lady to Double Edge. Much cheaper in the long run.

I find all these posts that are just like "razor, the end" interesting when you consider that there seem to need to be special razors made just for women.  Unless that's just a marketing ploy to charge more for them, but still.
Title: Re: The Gentlemen's Shaving Club
Post by: Crash Dummie on March 11, 2013, 02:01:22 PM
They're the same, with the huge lubricating strip vaguely reminiscing of a vagina.

But still, the 5 blades cartridge is about the same they use for the men's razors.

I use to cut the shit out of my neck before I started shaving in the shower. The steam opens up your pores and relaxes the skin for a clean, close shave. I get such a close shave this way that I was able to stop using shaving cream altogether and instead use regular bar soap. The ladies likey the close shave.
Title: Re: The Gentlemen's Shaving Club

I've noticed that not only is it generally painful to shave with water that's not scalding, you notice it more if you do cut yourself, and you still don't get as deep.  3 good reasons to turn the hot water on to max.  As for a shower, I can't imagine trying to shave without being able to see what I'm doing without leaving patches of hair left behind.  No, thanks.

I need a mirror too, especially since I know for a fact that my razors have the potential to take off a decent chunk of skin.
Title: Re: The Gentlemen's Shaving Club
Post by: Shadow on March 16, 2013, 02:07:30 AM
Yep. Shaving in the shower is easy mode since you're taking out two birds with one stone. And I don't think I've ever cut myself before.
Title: Re: The Gentlemen's Shaving Club
Post by: JasonzSon on March 16, 2013, 03:50:16 AM
Given the option, I also tend to use battery powered razors (they seem to get a deeper shave and have less chance of drawing blood if I do screw up) and I imagine that putting the handle of one of those in the shower is a surefire way to need more than a shave.

If you mean an electric razor, fine. If you mean a cartridge multi blades razor, it's bullshit.

It doesn't do anything: it's just that Gillette owns Duracell, so they want to sell more batteries.

Some companies would put batteries in anything.

I'd really like to give blood... but with my luck I'm really paranoid about it.

The second I step out of the van I'd probably get hit by a stray bullet or get some super paper cut or something and lose whatever blood I have left.

I went 14 times and everything was fine. Unless you have low blood pressure, there shouldn't be any problem.

Or if you're affraid of needles. You have 5 or 6 litres of blood in your body, and only take half a litre.

And they give you free cookies. Do they pay you for your blood in the States? In Canada, we just give it, but we also have free health care.

I do believe that it's donation. Although I'd almost be certain that there would be places that would pay you as well.

Hell, I've thought about doing it strictly so I could find out what my blood type is. You'd think they do something in grade school to let you learn something like that, but nope.
