Title: Horror Movies You're Looking Forward To
Post by: JasonzSon on February 07, 2013, 09:08:47 AM
If anything needs a comeback, this does.  What upcoming horror films are you not terrified of?

As for myself-
Godzilla.  I'm a little concerned that it's by the director of Monsters, but that hasn't been enough to overshadow my anticipation of this film.

Maybe it's because I don't watch a lot of trailers, but that's actually all I've got.  But I know some other people here have some.

Evil Dead, of course, but the one I'm most curious about is Clock Tower, based on the video games series.

It was supposed to be directed by the guy who did Snakes on a Plane, which is really weird, but he passed away recently.

There's about a 95% chance it's gonna be awful, but the games, the first one in particular, are so wonderful that I'll follow this more closely than the shitty Resident Evil and Silent Hill sequels.

Honestly, nothing so far. No, not even The Evil Dead.

Though looking up a list of upcoming horror movies this year lead me down a dark rabbit hole that revealed that Hellraiser and Suspiria are getting remakes. Oh, and a sequel to The Host.

They've already remade half the remakes of 50s films and most of the remakes of 30s films.  I guess they might as well start remaking the remakes of 70s films.

i was more talking about remakes of remakes that have not had decades of separation between them

Like Crash, I'm also looking forward to Evil Dead. There's also a new anthology movie called "The ABC's of Death" that has me interested. Other than that, I'm struggling to remember any of the recent horror movies I've read about. If I find any other ones that I find interesting, I'll either update this post or post again later.

Evil dead, Carrie. Probably a little bit more for Carrie, Im worried evil dead will just use over the top gore for cheap thrills instead of putting together something that is entertaining on the whole (fingers crossed). I loved both the original movies so I have a fair amount of expectation.

If I can get my hands on curse of Chucky definitely want to see it....the movie has to be good since its skipping theatres and going straight to video  [*rolleyes*]. Hope they don't fuck it up.

Yes, it's coming out around Halloween this year. It's supposedly going to ignore Bride and Seed, and should kick off after Child's Play 3. They're trying to make it a lot darker, like the original.

I could poke fun at the original all day, but this sounds like a pretty good idea.  The OCD in me says they should find a way to do all that and still feature the Bride and the Seed (kill them onscreeen, maybe), but otherwise, I applaud the effort.

I also hear they're going to have a few scenes of Charles Lee Ray before he died, which will be good because we've never really had that before... and that's possibly why Brad Dourif's daughter is in it so she can play Ray's daughter in the movie in some of those scenes. Just speculating though.

It's not, as I said earlier, it's supposed to follow Child's Play 3. They've already finished filming it, it's now in post-production.

"Supposed to" and "does" are two different things, especially these days when everybody's hungry to get their hands on a prequel.

A prequel would eliminate the Chucky doll from being in the movie. To which it isn't because the doll is in the movie... and if you read the plot, it has nothing to do with Chucky's origin being the focus of the movie... it may be a part of the movie, as I said in maybe a few scenes but the overall movie is centered around him going apeshit on people.

Only time I can recall seeing Ray is the beginning of the first Child's Play and Bride of Chucky (if you count the newspaper clippings and his corpse.) Either way, wasn't expecting to see a new one. May be interesting. Is Mancini involved at all?

Okay, just read it.  Didn't expect that much to be on there.  What I was expecting is one of those films where it's supposedly advancing the story, but spends 60 minutes in flashbacks about Chucky's past while only cutting back to the present at dramatic moments to kill somebody.

Yeah, he's only ever been seen in the first 5 minutes of the original film. Mancini is involved and probably always will be since he's the creator of the franchise and written all 5 previous films. He is directing this new one, which is not the greatest thing in the world but he admitted Seed got too out of hand with trying to be comedy.

Still a plus that he's involved, though. At least fans of the series know that the creator is the one that's fucking it up and then trying to fix it instead of the studios opting to reboot it completely.

On the flip side, if George Lucas had announced he was making a new, more serious Star Wars film and acknowledged the flaws in the prequels, would anybody believe it would be that much better?  Not stating a position, just food for thought.

It's hard to say, really. The films he wasn't heavily involved in turned out to be the better of the bunch, but the ones he was involved in......yeah. It really depends on where he'd be mentally. For example, my favorite of the Indiana Jones movies is Temple of Doom for being the darkest of the bunch (though still having a bit of camp to it.) If I'm not mistaken, Lucas was in a pretty dark place at the time of writing it. If he could find something like what he was going through for that, it's entirely possible that him promising to make them "darker" could also lead to them being better.

The first Wolf Creek was nowhere near as bad as I was led to believe. Not a masterpiece, but more fun than most movies of that type.

A few thoughts on some upcoming horror flicks.

1) The Predator (release date: September 14, 2018)

I didn't love the trailer, but I sort of liked the vibe. Still, there hasn't been a great Predator movie since 1987, so I'm rather lukewarm toward this.

2) Suspiria (release date: November 2, 2018)

The trailer has a bit of a surreal vibe to it, but you can't compete, nor beat, the original, which is a 70's classic.

3) The First Purge (release date: July 4, 2018)

I will not lie, I adore the idea of the movie. Showing the USA government as the murderous entity that they are appeals to my leftist point-of-view. But come on, the trailer gives far too much away. I've not seen the second or third Purge (Anarchy and Election Night), but this one sort of interests me. I just wish they had tried a more subtle approach.

4) The New Mutants (release date: August 2, 2019)

Haven't been following the X-Men movies at all, but a horror take on the New Mutants? Ever since this trailer first came out, I was interested. It's been pushed back a few times, but the trailer still fundamentally looking interesting.

5) The Little Stranger (release date: August 31, 2018)

Didn't hear about this until today (which sort of prompted this post), but I really like the trailer and the sort of style it looks like it's going for. Not sure if the movie will go a supernatural route or not (I'm hoping for not), but this may well be one I go out to see.
