Title: Games you love that everyone else hates
Post by: Crash Dummie on February 06, 2013, 04:28:56 AM
Title says it all. Are there any games that are considered to be awful by the majority of people that you enjoy anyway? If so, why? Stories of personal bias are always interesting. I'll start.

Friday the 13th (NES)

This probably comes as no surprise to anyone. Jason is my favorite horror character despite my better judgement, and I based my avatar on the sprites from the video game.

Everyone shits on this game. AVGN ripped it 10 new assholes in one of his early reviews. People complain about how hard it is to kill Jason, the fact that he's been colored purple, the confusing map, the slow camp counselors, the "Jason Alarm", the rock that flies into an arc over the head of the enemies.

I say bullshit, these guys never took the time to learn how to play the game. Sure, any well designed game should be easy to learn (yet tough to master), and I'm not claiming Friday the 13th is without any flaws. It WAS an LJN game after all, and most likely a quick cash in, but there are some brilliant ideas in the not so perfect execution.

The only choice they made I won't defend is Jason's color. It looks off, and they probably only did it because it's a children's game, and a rotting zombie would have turned them off. Well, why make a game bout a murderer then? Just color him like he should be. I did it.

Let's talk about the counselors. Many people complain that only two of them, Mark and Chrissy, are useful. While that's true, I see it as an accurate portrayal of the movies. Mark and Chrissy would likely be the leading, surviving couple, and the other ones the stupid, out of shape counsellors who get slaughtered by Jason.

When you get in the cabins (which are easy to naviguate, unlike most people claim) however, every counselor fight the same, so they're on equal grounds when they're inside, and that's where you'll spend most of your time fighting Jason. Just make sure you kill a few Zombies with everyone, in front of a cabin so you can retreat, until they have a knife of machete, which are miles better than the rocks, and you're good to go.

But what if the Jason alarm rings, and you have to save a counsellor who's far away while you're controlling a slow character? Most people don't know this; you enter any small cabin (should take 10 seconds at most), push start, and select the character who's being attacked to directly fight Jason.

Jason isn't so hard by the way, like every Punch-Out!! bad guy, you just have to learn his pattern, dodge well and counter-attack.

The map makes perfect sense.

When you're in the bottom part, you push right, you go right. Notice how it curves and the pathway is essentially a big circle? That's why your character goes left when you push right at the top of the map, stop complaining.

There are also a mulitude of secret areas and weapons to find. They're high risk/high reward, and completely optional. You can naviguate the woods, though it's easy to get lost/killed, and hope to find Jason's house and a powerful weapon inside. You don't have to do it, and it's supposed to be hard, yet people bitch about it.

You can also go in the caves, and find the shrine where Pamela Voorhees' head lies. Yeah, it comes to life, flies around and is hard to kill, but you get special weapons and armor from her. Who cares if her head wasn't alive in the films, it's a video game.

And last but not least, it's one of the few NES games that have a sense of genuine tension. Jason can be anywhere in the map, stalking you, and you never see him until he's right up your face. You know what other game did it? Slender, and everyone was spooked by it.

If it sounds like I'm saying that it's the greatest game ever, believe me, I'm not. The game is repetitive, unbalanced, sometimes clunky and a lot more could have been done with it, but taken for what is is, I'll say it's a very interresting, and partially successful early attempt in the survival horror genre.

I quite like Friday the 13th, I just never know what I'm doing.

My answer for this is always obscure PS2 game Oni. Made by the same people that make the Halo games. I don't like the Halo games, I did like this.

I'm sorry if I reply to these topics very quickly...I'm a little excited this board is back still.  [*uhoh*]

Its reviews seem to be mostly pretty decent however. I understand the content didn't deliver on the promises made by the company?

Final Fantasy X-2

Oh, it's ridiculous.  There are parts of it that make absolutely no sense.  They try to be sexy and fail.  The main villain is ridiculous.  The magic of this universe completely clashes with that of the original game.

Still, I call this a guilty pleasure.  I played this before the original, I believe because it was cheaper at the time (no shit).  It was fun exploring the world, and even now it's fun seeing how the world changes between games.  I enjoyed leveling each character up in multiple class, seeing the creative design between combining each character class and character, and at times I enjoy the skimpy outfits in ways that people who call this a "dress-up" game just don't think about.  If nothing else, this game moves more quickly than any Final Fantasy game I've ever seen, which makes up for many of the more foolish decisions they made by not lingering on them long or even returning to some of them.  I don't know if I'd recommend it, but I wouldn't shy away from playing it.

The recent Final Fantasy games seem to take an essentially fun combat/leveling system, and putting it in the middle of a shit storm of stuff I hate with all my guts.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say anything bad about Katamari.

As for myself... honestly, I can't think of anything. I'm sure I've played more than my fair share... I'm just drawing blanks. Maybe I'll think of something later.

That might be the reason why I've barely made any progress in XII.

There's probably something, but at this moment, nothing is coming to mind. I only play PlayStation 2 games anyway, and everything on that system is golden, so probably nothing. :p

It's X-2 - it has to be good.

I wouldn't know - I don't know a thing about the Final Fantasy series.

Walk around, random fight. Stupid world destroying plot. Rinse, wash, repeat.

Seems to be something more, as it's so popular, but that summary works with me.

Most people say that about most things Japanese.

It's not. Really. That's all it is for 13 games (plus an MMO that Square Enix likes to pretend never existed.)

Or you could direct me to the title of the thread and it'd be a chapter closed.

Anyways, I honestly can't think of a game I like that everyone else hates. I generally flock to games like Metal Gear Solid or the God of War series. Perhaps the Guitar Hero games? I dunno. :/

I remember you talking about a beat-em-up called "The Bouncer", which had mediocre reviews, but you said you adored it.

I played it a short time after that and quickly realized how wrong I was.  [*laugh*] Though, another beat em up I loved that got "meh" reviews was Urban Reign. Kinda hard to not love a game where you can fight as Paul or Lee from Tekken inside a steal cage like facility against two other players. Especially when that game has a pretty heavy wrestling type influence with grapples and double team grapples.

I tend to be biased in favor of beat-em-ups. Streets of Rage is my religion; if you haven't played the remake, download it NOW. It's free, it has every levels, every characters, new stuff, tons of modes and it's AWESOME.

Another genre I tend to love despite mediocre titles is Survival Horror. I can't get enough of the PS1 and PS2 horror games.

I had the SOR Remake before I did a HD restore a few months back. Now I'm unable to find it. Seems Sega put a cease and desist on it.

It's not on Bombergames website anymore, but a little googling will do wonders. Look for version 5.

I had to do a LOT of googling to find a Mac version.

I don't know many people that loved Alan Wake. To be honest, I don't know many people that have even played Alan Wake at all. But it's fucking excellent. Nothing wrong with it as far as I'm concerned.

I love the hell out of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest.

It's a self concious RPG for beginners, with decent, streamlined gameplay, kick ass music and a plot that's much more fun and less stupid than any of the more recent Final Fantasies.

The whole concept of the game is new and I loved the way they turned it into episodes. It made playing the game easier in it's own way. "Finished an episode. I can go live  my life again."
American Nightmare, a sequel that isn't a sequel, seems to have capitalised less on the story and more on the gameplay though. I haven't played it yet, but will eventually. There should be a sale still on Steam if anyone wants it. Like $9 for both.

I totaly agree with you on FF x2. why do I like playing it? I don't know

it's like FF-8

it should be one of the worst Final Fantasy

the game is way too easy, the characters aren't much develloped, the game's lenght is shorter than FF-7
the story is "meh"

I just don't know why I love playing it.

but this game doesn't really belong in this thread since a lot of FF fans love it.

it's just, I don'T know why it's popular and I love playing it.

I like the Lord of the Rings SNES game.

It's awful and confusing, but the atmosphere is great, and I spent SO MUCH TIME playing it that it's like an old friend.
