Title: Saturday Morning Cartoons
Post by: JasonzSon on February 05, 2013, 03:40:41 PM
I'm sure here people here have something they watch and/or keep up on.  My own Saturday evening checklist:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - while technically this is a Friday show, I'm going to count it here.  Despite initially being wary of the art and tone, this is actually a pretty good adaptation, and taking darker turns as it goes on.  I'm curious to see how it goes.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - I think everything there is to say about this has been said on the internet.  So, I won't bother.

Green Lantern: The Animated Series - It took me a little bit to get used to the loose hand this show has with continuity.  Noting that, the only gripe I can legitimately have is taking a position from a female who really deserved it and giving it to an annoying male character for absolutely no reason.

Doctor Who - While technically not a cartoon, and it probably doesn't air in the Morning, this does air on Saturdays.  Not much to say about something that's off the air for another two months, though.

You're dead to me.

As for cartoons I watch? I haven't really seen any for quite some time. When I am watching something it is usually on Netflix, and usually some sort of prime time tv show.

We listing any cartoons we used to watch as a kid? I could make laundry lists about those, then.

I'm still as obsessed with The Simpsons and South Park as before. There isn't a week that goes by without at least a few episodes.
It's funny how I'm starting to watch old dutch cartoons again with my son.  [*happy*] One of my favorite times together.
Aiden also loves Road Runner!

It comes off as yet another show that's being random for the sake of random. It doesn't look funny, at all. I honestly don't see the appeal in it.

I don't think of it that way. Family Guy would be random for the sake of being random only, but Adventure Time has fun characters, narratives, dialogues and it hints as a rather dark backstory.

There are remnants of human civilization as we know it, but Finn is the only human character to be found. Everyone else has to be from another world, or horribly mutated by the radiations of a past war.

Maybe earlier Family Guy was random for the sake of random. Not so much anymore from what I've seen. Adventure Time comes off as yet another cartoon trying to capture what Ren and Stimpy had, yet looks nowhere near it's level. Every commercial I've seen for it has been super fucking obnoxious and has made me want to avoid Cartoon Network like the plague.

The Animaniacs or (ugh) the Mega Babies were obvious Ren and Stimpy rip offs (at least the former was decent), but Adventure Time feels really different. But hey, if it's not your thing, it's fine.

Then you have missed the horrifically dark undertones this show has. Nuclear apocalypse, characters literally losing their minds to become someone else, a male character wanting to be female, a child being born with a birth defect, the absolute loneliness of being the last of your race, the advance of AI. The show is fucking amazing and deserves your respect.

When the commercials cease to be obnoxious and gives me a reason to even give it a watch, perhaps then it will get the respect you think I should give it. But that's not likely considering Cartoon Network tries to cater to the lowest common denominator with everything they have on now (see the Annoying Orange.)

They go for ten minutes. Take out the time and just give it a watch. You have a computer. Watch it while sitting on this site. Watch a few. Give them a chance. If you still don't like them, then I acquiesce.

Dude, Animaniacs?  Which was designed to be, if anything a modern version of Looney Tunes and introduced some of the most memorable cartoons of its era?  You shall be the first one destroyed when Brain takes over the world!

I've only seen one episode of Adventure Time, but can understand the appeal... unlike the damn ponies. I've planned on giving it more of a watch but constantly forget due to watching other things in my off time.

Animaniacs is easily one of the best, if not the best, cartoons of my childhood. I don't really see how they're a knock off of Ren and Stimpy, though...

But My Little Pony and bronies are the worst thing to happen to the internet in the last few years. It is downright creepy that this show has more midtwenties men watching it than it does little girls. What the fuck, man?!

Mid twenties? The creepier ones are the mid thirties and over. And maybe it's just me, but every pic I've seen of those people, they look like the archtypical basement dwelling turbo virgins that wouldn't know what a life was if it curb stomped them.

Turbo Virgins.  [*laugh*]

I once watched a video of a conference with internet animators Egoraptor and Hot Diggedy Demon. HDD gives the Ponies a "Happy Tree Friends" treatments, and the "Bronies" love it.

That was the most autistic group of people I've ever seen gathered in a single room. Everything they said or did was cringe worthy, and HDD was a complete dick to them. It was grandiose.

Moving on. Surprised Young Justice hasn't been brought up at all. Granted, I stopped watching after the second episode. Not because I didn't like it, but because Cartoon Network kept changing when it was shown and it was hard for me to keep up. Still think instead of it being a Saturday morning show, it would have been a better lead in to the Adult Swim block.

Getting canned? Not that I've heard. From what I've read, it'll be rotated out for a while so they can debut that new, terrible looking Batman Cartoon, "Beware the Bat." If you haven't seen images from "Beware the Bat" it looks like something Tim Burton shits out everytime he's trying to make a quick buck.

He came around when Grant Morrison started writing for Batman. Instead of using popular villains, he tried creating new ones that never caught on. Mostly because Morrison is a terrible writer. At the time of the DC Nation being announced along with Beware the Batman, I think Morrison was still writing and DC was still pre-New 52.

The idea with Beware the Batman from what I remember is to use those newer villains in place of people like the Joker. Also, instead of having Robin, Nightwing, or Batgirl as his sidekick, Batman will be joined by a little Asian girl named "Katana." Oh, and Alfred will be dual wielding guns.

I believe so. Their reasoning for Beware the Batman is that people were bitching about the campiness of Brave and the Bold. The people wanted a darker Batman cartoon like TAS. So this is what DC is giving those people.

They're both action/comedy/drama shows based on an ensemble cast.  They both take place in Sci-Fi settings and include non Sci-Fi locations, though I wasn't counting that.

Definitely wouldn't say Teen Titans had an ensemble cast. Nor would I say it was a a drama. Definitely wouldn't say it was a comedy, but humor is subjective. Sci-Fi settings? Didn't know San Francisco (where Titans Tower is, if I'm not mistaken) was a Sci-Fi Setting.

It's set in a tower similar to the Justice League's, if I'm not mistaken.  Alien tech (which was definitely a main staple of their quarters any time it was shown in the show), etc.

Not all "futuristic" technology in a pseudo modern setting makes it "alien." Star Labs and Wayne Enterprises makes technological advancements in the comics, but I wouldn't go so far as to call either of them sci-fi ish. Also, if I'm not mistaken, wasn't the Watchtower (the headquarters of the JLA) comprised of technology and resources provided by Batman?

Sponge Bob is great. We can all agree that this one IS inspired by Ren and Stimpy, but aside from the first season, which had cheap animation and basic, kid friendly plots, it's been golden.

Adult Swim is just gold really. Most of their shows rule.

Might as well do this here.

This week - TMNT took a week off

Power Rangers - Okay episode.  We've probably seen this premise before but I haven't exactly been following all of the newest seasons so I couldn't tell you if it's recent.

Young Justice - Still waiting to see where they're going with this.  It's really a disappointment that they're canceling this, not because it's the best show ever, but because I can see every reason WHY they're canceling it.  The two poor decisions the writing department made were being too ambitious with the second season, and actually trusting the audience.  If I sound bitter it's because I am.  Anything that requires someone to pay attention to something for longer than an episode is absolutely beyond the scope of a modern audience and it just baffles the absolute fuckshit out of me that shows like the 1993 X-Men went on for over 5 seasons by being ridiculously complicated because people still watched it because it was awesome, while this, a much simpler show, is too complicated to hold the audience's attention and needs to be replaced with an all-comedy version of a show that people like because it was a good mix of comedy, action, and Batman TAS style drama.

Green Lantern - Every time I feel like my bitching and moaning about continuity is just that, bitching and moaning about continuity, they throw me for another loop.  Larfleeze losing all of his menace and actually having the concept of "giving"... why would they do that?  Why would they take one of the few two-dimensional characters that fans actually celebrate for being two-dimensional and try to change him? Sometimes I think the writers of this show just want to see how many ways they can fuck with obsessive fans.  I'm not intending to obsess, but this is probably the only change they've made that I can't rationalize in any way as to how this helps the story for new audiences.

See what happens when the best written show of the year takes a week off?  Meh, Season 1's almost over, too.

Jeez... they still make Power Rangers?

Saban bought it back (in association with Nick) two seasons ago.  Those seasons were crap.  This season with the 20th anniversary, the strong hope is good things.  Looks like they're using the Legend War from Gokaiger, so there's a lot of potential if they don't screw up.

How can they screw up Power Rangers, though? Literally all they do is fight monsters that balloon up and need to be megazorded.

Then again I haven't seen them since I was small...

If you have to hang out with six characters all season and not one of them has a shred of personality, the comic relief characters have absolutely nothing to do with the plot, and you have three clip shows in a 20 episode season, you're doing it wrong.

Honestly, I don't really care when anyone watches it. My problem is with the grown ass men roam around screaming at the top of their lungs how great this stupid fucking little girl's show is.

I was always under the impression that wrestling was a show for 11 year old boys, so I figured it was the same thing.

Not sure I understand this point... because things like TMNT were also targeted for people that age. I'm more or less pointing out that My Little Pony is generally marketed to GIRLS. Do we have penises or not?

This being 2013 and not 1960, I'm not sure how to respond to this.

That, and fiction that is only able to conceive of appealing to one gender is working on an archaic version of gender that assumes that your genitals actually impact your taste, interests, and the type of story you're capable of understanding.  Except for maybe porn.

My issue with the whole "brony" movement isn't that they like the show. What disturbs me about it is the way they have BECOME the show. I honestly think it's less about a tv show and more about trying to stand out in the most ironic way possible (it's funny because we like a show not aimed at us! Marvel at how counter-culture we are!). The whole thing is very insecure to me. Just like whatever you wanna like without trying to seek approval. You don't see us calling ourselves Walkies and twisting our personality to match characters from that show.

That's not even getting into the implied beastiality subcontext of it...

Expressing yourself is fine. But when you let something like this define the very person you are when you're in public, or otherwise, simply because you're too socially awkward to even attempt at acting normal there is something wrong with you.

A lot of these people are just genuinely fucked up and instead of trying to fix their problem they simply act out, reverting to being nothing more than a child. And when someone calls them out on it? Oh, you just simply don't understand, and are just ignorant, because this is who they REALLY are. I've seen deserts that hold more water than that argument.

Jus to make sure everyone understand, I agree with the bully from the comic strip.

Any interests, nerdy or not, are fine, but you also need to be a person that isn't a pain to be around.

Your statement made it kind of ambiguous. [*laugh*]

On an unrelated topic... are there any other cartoons out there, besides Adventure Time, which other people to actually be a decent watch? Seems like that is the only one that pops out of peoples' mouths when they're talking about modern day cartoons... I don't really hear a whole lot more than that one.

To my understanding Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is the best Saturday Morning show running at current.
