Title: Movies I liked at first but now find Meh
Post by: DeraiLer on March 09, 2013, 07:34:00 AM
Remember seeing a movie and just finding it a delight? Then years later you go back and view it again and that magic just seemed to have faded? Maybe the last time you saw it you were having a good time? Getting a blow from a swedish hooker or stoned out of your gord and thought you were riding a flying pony instead of actually watching that movie you had playing on the telly.

Well post your freshly severed from film faves item here and tell us the details.

I shall start. Last night I sat down and put my pristine copy of 28 Weeks Later into the DVD player to enjoy great zombie mayhem (and don't start with the "they weren't zombies" shit, save that for another thread, only to find that this film I thought was a good work was actually pretty flawed and a challenge to sit through at times. What happened in the past few years that downgraded what I thought was a gem of a flick? The shoddy camera work, horrid editing and just execution of this story built up to a less than enjoyable viewing experience. Sure some scenes were cool but overall it just seemed arduous viewing. Scenes I thought were cool the first time around just felt less than this time around. Something tells me the issue is in the Directing. Danny Boyle should have helmed this and not passed it off to a hack.

Oh well, Back to the DVD shelf for you 28 weeks later. Maybe in 28 months from now you will seem like a masterpiece once again.

Blades

I really did enjoy those movies, but last month I watched them with a friend, and I somehow got bored.
I thought I lost my time watching it.

well maybe not the first one, but as for the others, I don't like them anymire. they weren't my favorite Action-Horror Vampire movies, but they were enjoyable... until recently.

I might need to rewatch Blade 2 but I remember thinking it was the best of the set.

I always liked the first one the most, except for the ending when the CGI started to get wacky.

I'm looking forward to the results of this topic.  I for one know that such examples exist for me, I just can't think of them.  I do know I tend to have films that I dislike on first watch, and find that I appreciate them more on repeated viewings.  Funny thing is, when I'm trying to remember some, I can't.

I'm sure there are more that I'll think of later, but the first one that pops into my mind at the moment is Spaceballs.

Bring the hate.

Not 'don't like.'

that's one i never cared much for in the first place.

i would have to say for me the first couple saw films  and the first two  final destination films

When they were first released they were new and fresh ideals that were great to watch, but after seeing  half a dozen unneeded sequels the originals upon further viewing seem to lose their luster.

OH! I have another one... you're all going to love this- From Dusk Til Dawn.

Honestly though, I'm not so sure that it's meh to me, as much as I think that might might just be overhyped.

It might be overhyped.  I enjoy it plenty, but I wasn't blown away by it.

Exactly. It's alright in my book, but eh... nothing spectacular in my opinion.

I think my problem with it is that it went from a kidnapping movie to vampires in literally the span of a few seconds, with no warning.

I didn't mind that, but then, even without thinking it's one of the best movies of all time, I still think it's in Tarantino's league.

The cottage, at first I really loved it and wanted to buy it. Watched it second time around and just felt meh. I guess some movies seem really good if you're in the mood for it.

From Dusk Til Dawn.

No, for me that one has remained just as entertaining with each viewing. Clooney is a despicable man but put in a scenario where you NEED that kind of person to stay alive.

Most recently would be TDKR (a.k.a.: BATMAN WITH BANE 2).

It was fun the first time around, but by the second time I'd seen it, I would notice all the plot holes and continuity errors, and how so many scenes were stupid/downright cheesy...

Honestly, it's a pretty movie, with many fun scenes, but the more I think about it, the more I realize I don't really like it.

Yeah, i just cut to the Bane scenes.

Bane was indeed fucking great. I love Tom Hardy, and he kicked ass in this movie.

And now we can make fun of the voice of another character than Batman.

It's the best of the series by far. Mostly because Guillermo Del Toro is a fantastic director. Also didn't hurt that Ron Perlman was awesome in it.

Oh, I suppose I should mention the Star Wars prequels.  I loved them when I saw them in theatres, but I find them less and less interesting with subsequent viewings.  It doesn't help that my ex absolutely loves them.

Currently my favorite thing on the internet:

Honestly, though. I still love The Dark Knight Rises. Perhaps more so than The Dark Knight. Sure, it has some problems, but I can easily overlook them for the enjoyment factor the film provides. Plus, I love Nolan giving the finger to everyone that asked for Robin to be in the movies. Well played, Nolan. Well played.

Anyways, I can't really think of a specific movie that I liked at first and then found to be only "meh." That's not to say that I don't have those feelings towards specific movies, because I do. It's just early as fuck, I just woke up, and I'm drawing a blank.

I didn't enjoy Rises, I watched it once, and I don't think I'll ever watch it again.

and I thought of another movie that I  find "Meh" now.

Jurassic park 2

I still enjoy the first one, and I thought I enjoyed the second. but I tried to watch it yesterday, and I got bored.

Child's Play gets sillier everytime I watch it, sorry Chuck.

Oh... Rises.  When Crash said 2 I was thinking he was talking about the animated adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns.  I hate it when they re-use an acronym.

And no, for the record, I haven't watched it, so I wouldn't know if it had Bane in it or not.

If you're talking about the Dark Knight Returns, no Bane. The comics came out before Bane existed. Should give the movies/comics a watch/read. They're great.

So these were the last comics made before Frank lost his mind?   I seem to recall hearing that the decline had started in this story.

He lost it at either Robocop, or The God Damn Batman.

No, ASBAR is full blown insanity from the first page on.  He had clearly lost it well before starting that story.

Quick short and to the point. I loved Conan the Destroyer as a kid. By about the time I was 18 I finally started to see how bad it was, though the music is still great, to bad most of the rest is really yawn fest.

Saw.

Age and the shitty sequels DID NOT do this movie any good. It's still decent, and the best of the bunch, but meh.

The Crow

I absolutely LOVED this movie as a kid. Then I saw it recently and I was numb. There were some great moments (I find Ernie Hudson to be the only likeable character in the movie and "There ain't no coming back" scene) other than that, the Crow fucking blows. It tries waaaay too hard to take itself serious despite the fact that just about everyone in it is chewing scenery. People thought this movie would have launched Brandon Lee into super stardom had he not died during the making of it, but after watching it again, he likely would have wound up in another crappy direct to video movie with Dolph Lundgren.

The first time I watched Nightmare 5 and 6, I enjoyed them.  You know, that fannish, semi-childish way that you can watch a movie and like it as long as it has those one or two things you like (in this case, Freddy cutting people).  I don't think I need to elaborate on how I feel about them now.

The Batman sequels (Forever and Robin) are similar, except for the fact that they are what introduced me to Batman.  It's the equivalent of someone whose first slasher film was Bride of Chucky or Nightmare 5 and then years later they become familiar with the genre and look back at it.

I loved Batman and Robin when it came out, then I hated it, and now I'm pretty sure I love it again for all the wrong reasons.

I should say I don't absolutely hate the Batman sequels, but it's a love/hate sort of thing.  I can absolutely love parts of them and can't stop shaking my head at other parts.

I think it's quite natural to enjoy something as a kid and then find it meh or hate it when you're older... you have more tolerance for shitty movies when you're young and when you get old you hate everything and everyone.

That's pretty much the case. Though, there are some exceptions. For example, I still love "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"

Not me, I suffer from rosey glasses pretty badly. If I liked it as a kid, I'll pretty much still like it today (IT is a big example).

I'm not saying everything has that effect... I, of course still enjoy Child's Play, IT, Robocop etc. The vast majority of shit I liked as a child I still watch and enjoy BUT there are also plenty of other things that I thought was okay as a child and now wonder "WTF is this shit?" when I see it. It rarely ever has the opposite effect.
