Horror Talk / Re: The Devil's Candy (2015)

I would definitely recommend giving it a go. It's not that often that I praise modern mainstream horror movies, so this flick did something right. [*laugh*]

Indeed. Especially during the whole possession phase we went through from 2010 to something like 2013, it's nice to see another slasher pop up (even if it isn't original).

I guess we did have Happy Death Day last year, but that's all I can really think of.

Horror Talk / The Devil's Candy (2015)
June 13, 2018, 04:56:14 AM
The Devil's Candy is an intense experience, and one of the finest horror films I've seen from the past five years. A bit shorter than average, it's a digestible flick. While not overly gory, there are some scenes of brutality and more often than not some heart-pumping sequences. A highly recommended movie with likable main characters.

What did you feel in regards to The Devil's Candy?

Horror Talk / The Man Who Laughs (1928)
June 13, 2018, 04:44:01 AM
This dark and moody silent classic is one of those movies that's a classic for the reason. The cast is amazing, the story tragic yet deeply engaging, and it's not one that you'd soon forget. While not a horror movie in the strictest of senses, I do think fans of the genre, especially fans of the older flicks, would rather enjoy this.

What did you think about this classic silent?

Horror Talk / Halloween (2018) Trailer

So this is disregarding every movie past the 1978 original, which is fun. Looks a solid trailer, and hopefully the movie will be able to live up to the hype.

I knew you had bad taste in women, though, so I'm not feeling all that surprised.   [*winkgrin*]

Horror Talk / Re: Siodmak (2012)

Indeed, that seems to fit.

Not sure if it'd be available in Australia, but it is on YouTube in full, so if you're ever interested in giving it a shot, by all means. I don't believe there has been a DVD release, or Blu-Ray, for that matter, so watching it via YouTube may be your best bet.

Horror Talk / Satan's School for Girls (2000)

I won't doubt that this television remake of a 70's TV movie is goofy. It has some utterly laughable special effects (watch that ending and feel the glory), but damn it, I had fun with this one. Not particularly a good movie, but am I glad I took the time to see it again? Oddly, yes.

What did you think of this remake?

Horror Talk / Siodmak (2012)
June 06, 2018, 06:19:01 AM
The biggest flaw with Siodmak is the long run-time (an hour and fifty minutes), but if you can take that, this tale about a video blogger and police officer trying to track down a serial killer might do you well. For it's budget, there are some pretty creative and touching scenes, a good cast, and overall, a moderately decent movie.

Have you yet seen Siodmak?

You have no idea how funny I find it that we consistently rate movies the same. Every single fucking time.  [*laugh*]

This movie wasn't my type of thing. Like you say, drawn-out scenes, over-the-top comedy, and just sorta stupid. Like I said in my review, I'm not against some silly horror movies (Terror Toons being a good example), but Nightmare Sisters was pretty pathetic, overall.

Another older thread I missed.

I have two movies to bring up that are pretty widely loved by the horror community that I don't care for at all.

1) The Shining (1980)

I get it, I'm not alone in my moderate dislike of this movie. But I also feel the 1997 mini-series far surpasses this version in about every way, and I've about never seen another say that. The 1997 version, despite it's much lower-quality, is fantastic, whereas this version, while not god-awful, is nothing particularly great.

2) Drag Me to Hell (2009)

When this came out, I saw it in theaters. Rated it a 2/10, or something like that. Thought it was generic, uninspired, and pretty damn shitty. Next thing I know, every horror fan is praising the movie, which just blew me away. Now, to be fair, I've seen this movie only once, and haven't gotten around to rewatching it yet, but though I might give the movie a more fair rating when I see it again (5/10, maybe), based on all I remember, there's about nothing worth watching this movie for, besides maybe Justin Long.

Horror Talk / Re: Humongous (1982)

Sort of sounds like when I first saw The Mutilator. Was so pumped to finally see this slasher classic, and I just felt underwhelmed throughout the whole film.

I've not seen this one, but it's one of those movies that's on my "want-to-see" list.

Horror Talk / The Cat and the Canary (1927)
June 03, 2018, 07:21:27 AM
The Cat and the Canary is a fantastic horror/comedy mix that stands up to this day with it's heavy atmosphere, artistic flair, and great cast. A true classic of the silent era, and one of the last movies Paul Leni brought us.

What are your thoughts on this silent classic?

Other Movies / Kalifornia (1993)
June 03, 2018, 07:12:54 AM
The four main actors are easily the most impressive thing about this movie. The story is certainly decent, and when violence does occur onscreen, it's almost always solid, but without Brad Pitt and David Duchovny, none that really matters. See it for the stars, if nothing else.

What did you think of Kalifornia?

Watched two early this morning, both rewatches.

Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)

Also known as Amélie, this quirky French movie, with drama, romance, and humor, has long been a favorite. In truth, I can't help but feel sad when it's over, as it was such a joyous ride. One of my favorite non-horror foreign films, I can't think of a single bad thing about the movie. An easy 10/10.

Along Came Polly (2004)

The only reason I watched this again was because Yes Man wasn't on Netflix.  [*laugh*] I've never been a Ben Stiller fan, and more to the point, this movie is just so average. I like the occasional romantic-comedy, but this was more comedic than romantic, and just didn't hit me the way other romantic comedies do. Just an average movie, and haven't really changed my view on it since I first saw it. 6.5/10.
