Horror Talk / Re: Offerings (1989)

Shame you didn't like it. I certainly agree most of the kills aren't memorable, but other factors certainly leave a positive impression of the film in my mind.

See, another case in point - you enjoy it, as many people seem to, but despite having seen it twice now, it still doesn't work for me at all.

I know my taste in horror has been called "odd" before, so I'll chalk it up to that. [*laugh*]

Horror Talk / Wishmaster 2: Evil Never Dies (1999)
September 13, 2018, 04:50:14 AM
While the first Wishmaster is an enjoyable entry to 90's horror in a variety of ways, the second film lacks almost everything that made the first one good. The story here isn't really something that much appeals to me, and Divoff's acting comes across as much hammier here than in the first film. Even the special effects mostly falter, likely because it's a straight-to-video film. Overall, Wishmaster 2: Evil Never Dies, is a disappointment.

What are your thoughts on this sequel?

While it has both solid gore and special effects (any less, and there'd have been no reason to make a TMC film), The Beginning comes across as pretty bland, and despite being an origin story, doesn't really have that much to add.

What are your thoughts of the prequel to the 2003 remake?

Horror Talk / The Bells (1926)
September 09, 2018, 02:13:24 AM
In many ways a rehash of The Avenging Conscience: or, 'Thou Shalt Not Kill' from 1914, The Bells still does well in taking it's time and showing us the human side of many of the characters. An early Karloff appearance is good fun, and the ending was a joyous ride also. A somewhat bleak movie, but nothing atypical from the time period.

What are your thoughts on this silent film?

Horror Talk / Beyond the Gates (2016)
September 08, 2018, 04:05:52 AM
Beyond the Gates looks pretty - fantastic soundtrack, great coloring, just a fun retro-vibe, but the story is a bit shallow, and loses a bit of steam and suspense toward the end. Not by any means a terrible movie, it's just that Beyond the Gates could have been so much more. Aesthetically-pleasing, but story-wise, Beyond the Gates needed work.

What are your thoughts on style over substance?

You know, until you mentioned it, I didn't even realize that this was in the same universe. Apparently, it's a spin-off of the third Conjuring?

And Annabelle's related to this series?  [*odd*]

Dude, I think I've been missing stuff. [*uhoh*]

Sounds god-awful (pun intended).

This is why I stick with 1920's and 1930's horror - they can't disappoint (much). :P

Horror Talk / Re: Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead (1994)

The second movie has such a different tone than the first. I loved the first film and the utterly confused and dreamy aura, but the second is pretty fun too, and much more an 80's movie (which makes sense, since the first came out in '79 :P).

I'd recommend watching the second one, and if that doesn't do much for you, then you could probably live without seeing the rest of the series. You'll just be one of the black sheep of horror fans. [*hehehmm*]

Horror Talk / Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead (1994)
September 06, 2018, 08:25:49 AM
With a few iffy plot choices and a less than amazing cast, the third Phantasm is easily the weakest of the first three. Not a terrible film, and still nearing average, but certainly not as memorable the as the classics that came before.

What are your thoughts on this sequel?

Just noticed this is on NetFlix. Must have just been added. I may give it a go later this week.

Horror Talk / Re: Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II (1987)

I've been following some ratings myself for the last few years.  The Driller Killer (1979) used to be around, if I recall, a 4.3, 4.4/10, and recently, it's been around 5.0 or 5.1/10. Not a significant increase, but still, progress.

As it so happens, on a side-note, I don't like the Driller Killer, but it does show a slight growing fondness within the last five years.

It does blow my mind that Child's Platy used to be as low as a 5.4, though - I would think since the late 1990's, if not mid, it would have been seen as something like a new-age horror classic.

Common consensus (or, IMDb votes) are on my side. Original has a 5.4/10 average, this one has a 5.6/10 average.

In yo face.  [*finger*] [*hehehmm*]

Misread the message you wrote, and though I'd post the thread before my review. For some reason. To be fair, I was high at the time, so take that as you may.  [*laugh*]

Seriously, though, this was a pretty decent film - not sure when you last saw it, but you might end up liking it if you give it another go.

Horror Talk / Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II (1987)
September 05, 2018, 09:47:13 AM
Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II is a fun 80's flick, and despite changing from a slasher to a possession movie, it turned out rather well. While the first one was generally sluggish, this flick moves at a good pace with a somewhat interesting story and some damn good special effects.

What are your thoughts on this superior sequel?

Haven't seen Laid to Rest in years, but this does look decent.

In fact, somewhat amusingly, this is one of the 641 movies on my "want to see" list. Basically a bunch of horror flicks that have caught my eye.

Not sure when I'll get to this one (my watch list isn't really something I'm focusing on watching through at the moment), but it does look like something I'd potentially enjoy.
